Essential Clie Software

SwitchDash

SwitchDash is a simple application which performs a very important task- a task the Clies should have integrated into ROM in the first place. The hi-res Clies have a preference panel which allows you to turn off the hi-res assist for applications and games which react badly to the 320 x 320 resolution (i.e. double image or extreme slowness).

The problem is that it can be VERY slow to use if you have a lot of applications checked and it also does not cater for apps and games on Memory Stick (which is a glaring ommision).

SwitchDash
SwitchDash caters for all of your apps on internal or external media and does the job quietly and efficiently. Once loaded you will forget it is there and can enjoy your programs in hi or low res anyway you like.

Available at Yahoo Clie User Group

You can also download the English translation of PowerHiRes 1.0 by Brian Fox- PowerHiRes is similar to SwitchDash, but doesn't exhibit some of the quirks of SwitchDash. Here's the file.

Thin Font Fix
Thin Font Fix Here's a tiny application that is even simpler than SwitchDash but it serves a desperately needed purpose.

With the hi-res Clie screen comes a default font which is very thin and can be hard to read for extended periods (see left).

This application simply 'boldens' the standard font and it works in any app that is not affected by hi-res. The beauty of this font (see right) is that it does not take up any more space than the standard 'thin' font.

Like SwitchDash it's free of charge and available from Yahoo Clie Users Group

Filez
Filez is a free file manager that should work on most Palm powered PDAs. What makes it special is the fact that you can beam files from ROM as well as RAM, you can easily move/copy files from RAM to memory stick and vice versa and it is incredibly easy to use.

In my opinion this is the most sophisticated File Manager available for no cost and it competes very well with most of the chargable managers out there.

You can grab your copy from NoSleep Software

Filez Here is a better breakdown of the features from NoSleep's website:-

Can view and edit files via a built-in hex editor Mem card-to-mem card copy/move ability Detailed memory card information screen Detailed hotsync info screen Support for memory cards (VFS-based) Fast cache-optimized list refreshes Command bar support (palm os >= 3.5) Smarter selecting/sorting in the list view Nifty progress bar while loading Used memory/total memory display Menu option to set the backup/copy bits of all files at once International date support Scroll the list by entering a letter into the graffiti area Edit the create/modify/backup date/times (including "never" option) Customizable 2nd column: creator, type, size, record count, attributes Color coded list view Various sorting orders Many filtering options: filename, creator, type, size, record count, attributes Graffiti shortcuts from the list view Cool icons to indicate some attributes Shows files on external memory cards All file attributes can be changed Hide-ROM option Fast listing and sorting Ultra easy-to-use

DispArt
DisPart Possibly not an essential but it looks good- DispArt looks and acts like a screensaver. You have a choice of 9 hi-res screensavers ranging from dancing cubes to growing trees. There is also an MP3 visualisation tool which moves to your music.
I cannot see an option to have it running after a specified time but it look excellent left on when your Clie is sat in it's cradle.

Get it here. The file has been compressed in LZH format (not ZIP) so you will need a tool like WinAce to decompress it.

PowerJog
PowerJog PowerJog is written by Yamada Tatsushi and allows you to use the JogDial on your Clie even if a program does not natively support it. There are many other features included which will much reduce your use of the stylus. Go here to download it and click 'PowerJOG ver1.1‚̃Aƒbƒvƒf[ƒ^Œ“‘ÌŒ±”Å‚ðƒ_ƒEƒ“ƒ[ƒh' PowerJog
