Clie Hints & Tips |

14/04/2002 Problem 1-Most of the commonly available palm OS browsers will not open the hotmail site. This includes browsers like Blazer,Eudora e.tc This is because the hotmail site relies on scripts which these browsers do not support. The notable exception I am aware of is the new Tapliner browser, but this loads the whole page which is unwieldy, slow and not the ideal method for a PalmOS based device IMHO. Solution-You need a website which will collect the mail from the hotmail server and then make it available to your palm OS device. The best site out there for doing this is www.gopherking.com You need to register, but there is a free 30 day trial. After this, a years' subscription costs $24.95 via Paypal only. 6 months trial is $14.95 Gopherking will trawl all the your email servers and collect all your email from all your registered email accounts (not just hotmail) into one place. Problem 2-How do you get the email on to your Palm device? Solution-There are two ways to do this. Online and offline. Online-You use any of the available Palm browsers (I use the Eudora browser [www.eudora.com]) to connect your palm to the net via an infra-red or land modem. You then access the gopherking website and once you log in your emails are all there. You can write, delete or forward emails from all of your registered email accounts while you are online. This includes web based ones like hotmail and POP3 accounts like BT internet. Gopherking will not delete the emails from the server which means you can still download them to your PC whenever you want. Offline-This requires a PC and Avantgo. You make a customised gopherking channel at Avantgo (www.avantgo.com) and then hotsync your device. You then fill in your gopherking user name and password and hotsync again. The device will then download your emails from the gopherking server during the 2nd hotsync. You can reply, forward and delete emails. These are submitted as forms and sent to the server at the next hotsync. The trial version restricts you to just 2 hotsyncs per day. I have used this method for about 3 weeks now to check four email accounts and it works everytime without a hitch. Well worth the regn fee IMHO. |

25/02/2002 I am sure most of the visitors to www.clieworld.co.uk are familiar with most of these sites, but if they pick one up they find useful, that would be great. Some of the sites are other discussion groups and are included as additional resources and not intended to detract from your forum - CLIE World. Hopefully others can add to this list and make it the most comprehensive on the web! Visit Frequently - Although the banter in these discussion groups, at times, is quite sophomoric (i.e. Why does Sony Suck?, What games rock?, I-didn't-bother-to-read-the-manual-and-I-want-to-know-how-to-delete-a-progra m?) they offer the best information out there about the CLIE. Many offer a files section with the newest software. 11/02/2002 If you guys have been using NoahPro, you know that it creates a vfscache file which takes upto 1MB of your Clie's RAM....well, i found a little solution for it....first, put the database file into /PALM/LAUNCHER and put the NoahPRO in Clie's RAM...now, run NoahPRO...it will create vfscache and other necessary dbs...now, exit NoahPRO, run PowerRUN and move NoahPRO to MS...this way, you don't have to delete vfscache everytime as it is moved to MS and copied back to RAM whenever NoahPRO is ran....the only downside to it is that, PowerRUN will have to copy the vfscache files back to RAM....but it is sure faster than NoahPRO creating vfscache everytime....of course, if you leave the vfscache in the RAM (t615, s360 owners), then this tip is not worth at all for you! ;) Written by Punk in the Clie World Forum |
