TakTik

(Review by Punk)

Taktik v1.0 is an awesome new game from Kickoo (http://www.kickoo.com/). Gameplay is somewhat like chess! You have different pieces with different strengths and defense. The game comes in three different flavors: 160*160 256-color, 160*160 16-bit color, and 320*320 16-bit color. There will soon be a grayscale version for monochrome devices!

After starting the game, you're presented with a very graphical introduction screen, and soon after that, you're presented with the game menu. On the game menu, you've the following choices:

QuickPlay Places the 18 pieces randomly for a quick play.
1 Player You play against the Palm.
2 Players You play against another player on the same device. Wireless version will be released soon!
Tutorial Walks you through the basics of the game, teaches you about each piece, and other necessary stuff needed for the game.
Options Options for sound, difficulty, wireless feature, etc.
Help A complete help documentation that teaches you everything about the game.
Register This is where you enter your registration code.

1 Princess...The main objective of the game is to save her!

The Gameplay

Each piece has a specific strength and defense. On the character pictures above, the scale on the left shows the strength, and the scale on the right shows the defense. The objective of the game is to capture the princess of the opposing team. Each piece can move only one space at a time with the exception of The Monster and The Buffoon. The Monster cannot move at all, while The Buffoon can move as many spaces until the blocked end! During the gameplay, players cannot see each other's pieces. The pieces are hidden. For example, if you look at the screen below, you'll notice that you cannot see the pieces for Palm.

This feature makes the game more challenging and fun! To find out what pieces are dead and how many of each is remaining, you can tap on "GraveYard." The icon for GraveYard is at the lower-right corner, the one that looks like an axe stuck on a wood-piece. Tapping on that icon will bring the screen below that shows the remaining pieces for each player. This feature helps you plan your moves, 'cause that's the only way of guessing what remains on the board.

When pieces are moved and brought together in a square, the fight begins between the two pieces. The fight scene is not animated, but happens internally. Strength and defense is compared to determine the winner between the two pieces. If the defense of one piece is lower than the strength of the other piece, the other piece wins. And, if the defense and strength are identical for both pieces, then both pieces are eliminated from the board.

Playing is very smooth. Game is very easy to understand, but very difficult to win! It seems that the game is little-bit less responsive to screen taps, but that could be just the device I'm using. Other than that, it is a very good game, and it's awesome to see more and more programmers creating programs utilizing the hi-resolution of Clie devices!
