Background
Somali Veterinary Association (SVA) is a nascent professional association, which gathers and unites Somali veterinarians, who are, due to the exceptional circumstances in their country, dispersed in all over the world. It has been fully established in 1997 after long lobbying, by patriotic individuals who were deeply affected by the lamentable situation of their livestock and were trying to bring about the change for the better that was within their reach.
Political unrest and long lasting tribal conflict have caused a total destruction of all central governmental institutions. All civil services have collapsed and veterinary services, the human problems overwhelming animal's, were forgotten. It was therefore conceived that, if there was a hope to revivify and institutionalize civil services in Somalia, there was no need to wait for the warlords to put an end to their endless conflict. A role played by the community was indispensable. Somali intellectuals and educated people should no longer remain inert and should integrate with their people. They should bear in mind that they alone were responsible for the resurrection of their agonized nation.
Each group had to try to do some thing in his sector and to do this, they had to pool their mental and material powers. It was merely that way, that many professional associations were evolved. The Somali Veterinary Association was of the most successful and corporate among those institutions.
Institutional Status
Apart from its popularity inside the country and the absolute commitment of Somali Veterinarians to SVA being the unique body representing them, the association has also, faster than normal, gained excellent international relations.
Somali Veterinary Association is now a member in the General Federation of Arab Veterinarians, as well as the Euro-Arab Veterinary Association.
SVA also envisages to expand its relations. It is particularly interested, to work in liaison with and to collaborate with the international organizations which are involved in rural development programs in Africa.
