Foreword

Xiin-faniin, was the personal horse of Sayid Mohamed Abdullah Hassan, a Somali patriotic hero who fought the colonial forces. The main transport means in that era was draught animals. horses were most suitable for war ambushes and urgent tribs. Historical records prove that Sayid Mohamed alone had more than 50,000 heads of horses. The total horse population of Somalia is now estimated at less than 1,000 heads .
The aim at this page to launch an open dialogue and a research on "The extinction of the horse population in Somalia".

To stimulate a discussion, Let us start with this argument.

According to some of Sayid Mohamed's Deravish, the colonial forces failed to resist the organized ambushes from the Deravish because Deravish horses were more hardy and capacious than, and outnumbered, the enemy's. The enemy have then to dwindle this quality poisoned the Deravish horses.

It is known from multiple sources that the Deravish have lost the bulk of their horses during the last periods of the war. But it is more likely that what has devastated the horses was not a deliberate poisoning. It could rather be a pandemic introduced to the country for the first time by the horses of the colonial forces, and are those diseases that have caused the extinction of the horses from this part of the continent.
