The wet soils are the best represented ecosystems in
theAlbanian coast. Characteristic for the low eluvional
coasts, these ecosystems are situated in the north and in the
south ofthe country forming in this way a continuous chain
of very useful habitats. The history of creation of wetlands
belongs to thousands of years ago, but the history of their
destruction and the time when they are dried up is quite
near. The polices of economicdevelopment in the past, not
aiming at protecting the nature, have caused damages and have
destroyed the structures of thesewetlands. In the past "the
wet lands" were considered as damagesnature made to itself
and for a long period of time the names"swamp" and "morass"
meant several harmful elements for life such as humidity,
illnesses which resulted in poverty andendangered
life.Actually the wet lands are the best known and
bestrepresented ecosystems in the Albanian coast. Starting
from thenorth the most important wet lands are: Velipoje
lagoon, Drinibay where are involved the lagoons of
Kune-Vaini, Fushe Kuqe,Patok, Rodoni bay, Lalzi bay,
Karavasta-Divjake, the pine woodsof Pishporo, Vjose outlet,
Narte lagoon, Urikumi and Butrintilagoons. Given the
international interest for the wet lands'values and marking
the speed with which they are disappearing, the Council of
Ministers of the Republic of Albania declared onAugust 22,
1994 the zone of Karavasta lagoon as a place to becomprised
at Wetlands, Ramsari Convention on Mediterraneancountries,
while at the beginning of 1998 experts carried out the study
on protection and exploitation of lagoon system of Kune-Vain.
