The agrarian reform in the agricultural economy in 1945
expropriated the rich owners, nationalised the forests,
water resources, pastures and the big herds of live stock.
Some 70211 families benefited from the expropriated land,
while an area of 17 000 hectares was used to create the
first state agricultural enterprises of the socialist type.
A total number of 19,355 owners were expropriated. Prior to
1990,industry occupied 58 per cent of the social product,
while agriculture 25 per cent, with the livestock production
giving less than 1/3 of the total agricultural production.
Over 80s-90s, the growth of the general industrial
production was 1.8 per cent per year, while the growth of
the population was 1.9 per cent a year. Nationalization,
centralization of everything in the hands of the state, the
application of the principle of self-reliance, denial of any
kind of ownership to the peasant brought about gradually the
decline of the possible sources of the economic development.
The market was so much disposed of items so that at the
beginning of 80s the ratio system was practiced on food
articles. The industry and other branches of the economy
went into a general crisis.
Albania's Population
The Albanian population belongs to a very young age. More
than 40% of the population, men and women, belong to the
0-19 age-group, 50% of the population belong to the group
age of 20-64 and only 10% are more than 65 years old. As
compared with 1938, the population is tripled and it amounts
to 3,5 million inhabitants. Until the end of 70ies the index
of the average growth of population in a year was higher in
males, about 3%, while according to the latest registration
data in 1989, this index is higher in females, about 2%. In
1989 we have a population dispersion which graphically is
represented by a regular population pyramid, in 1995 this
pyramid changed in males belonging to the age group of 20 to
30 years old. This fact is explained with the emigration
phenomenon, which achieved its peak during the transitional
period. According to UNDP data 15% of Albania population is
actually living outside the Albanian territory.
