Members and friends who did not have a work commitment visited the garden of HRH the Prince of Wales at Highgrove. Every one enjoyed it tremendously in spite of a mishap with our bus at the entrance to Highgrove when the hydraulic mechanism for the boot lid failed and settled on the driveway and the lid had to be removed. We were made to feel most welcome. The gardens are very informal, peaceful and not manicured and are well stocked with trees and shrubs. Full and creative use is made of recycled materials, with fountains, seats and arbours. Before leaving in our repaired bus, we were given tea and biscuits. Money was donated to the Prince’s Charity and the “Licking Lassa fever Project”.
2008 was the first year that the three Gwent Soroptimist clubs – Abergavenny , Cwmbran and Newport united in welcoming their guests to their annual event. Hosted by Newport, a delicious luncheon was held in the Parc Golf Club, Machen. It was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Anne Dunne, Regional President Wales South, was the guest speaker. Next year it will be the turn of Abergavenny to host the lunch and in 2010 it will be Cwmbran, our 30th anniversary. This is the second joint event which the clubs holds. For several years, we have all celebrated St. David’s Day together, an informal fun event.
Yet again a good time was had by all. We welcomed old friends and fellow Soroptimists. Anne Dunne, Regional President attended. As usual the food was fresh and delicious. There were excellent prizes in the raffle. £305.00 was raised for the President’ charities St David’s & St Ann’s Hospice care.

For the third successive year, “Opera in the Park” was staged, in Pontypool Park, by musicians and singers of the “Welsh National Opera Company”. Due to inclement weather, the performances were held totally in the marquee. As in previous years, the afternoon performances were free. A newly-formed group of three sopranos, Diva, Diva, Diva sang beautifully for the first performance followed by the “Three Other Tenors” and then by “The Welsh Brass Consort” - members of the brass section of theWNO. The afternoon performances were particularly well-attended by highly appreciative audiences. For the ticketed evening performance the tenors were joined by one of the sopranos, a compère and the orchestra of the W.N.O. Attendance was a little down on last year but this did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of those present for the event.
The event was organised by artREGEN – a voluntary charitable group which was created to help in the regeneration of Pontypool through the Arts – and supported by Torfaen C.B.C. Cwmbran Soroptimists form the majority of the core members of the group. We are now embarking on a new project together with Torfaen Museum Trust and Pontypool park management to restore a fountain in the historic Italian gardens in the town.

Following our club meeting on 14th July, Patricia Horner from EXTEND (for “older” members of the Fitness League) led members in an enjoyable, not too strenuous, hour of exercise. We started like a Fred Astaire movie, all be it sitting down, exercising with bowler hats. When we had co-ordination exercises some of us lost all sense of direction and it was certainly not synchronised moving to music! Needless to say there was a lot of laughter and a good time was had by all. Members were interested about the EXTEND teachers and their programmes; especially their work with the residents in care homes to help maintain their flexibility and health and improve their quality of life.
