Mrs Morris demo |
Joy intro & appreciation |
Once again Mrs Morris of the Llangibby Garden Centre entertained the club with her demonstration of the planting of boxes and hanging baskets. She makes it look so easy and achieves eye- catching results. We had the usual raffle and an excellent meal.
Some of the club members met to discuss membership, recruitment and organisational issues especially the business and speaker meetings. Suggestions made will be taken to the Club Executive and then brought before the whole club for consideration. It was suggested that the whole club should take responsibility for Programme Action. Members and groups of members would be allocated individual projects to implement.
As usual, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea provided for the members by the Hotel.

An evening to raise funds for Project Sierra was held at Croesyceiliog Cricket Club on Sept.21st. A talk was given by Martha Musonza Holman a Zimbabwean who has lived in the UK since the 1990s. She prints batik work and has set up a Women’s Co-operative in a village in Zimbabwe to print fabrics and make pottery and jewellery. She regularly returns to Zimbabwe to help with the project and to find markets for their projects. She spoke about the difficulties experienced in Zimbabwe and said the best aid which could be given to women in Africa was to help them to help themselves. After her talk she sold some of the products and a buffet was served.

A very well attended conference was held at Cardiff International Arena. Nine members of S.I Cwmbran attended part or all of the conference, The opening ceremony was held on Thursday evening of the 29th October. This is when all the flags of the countries which form part of the Federation of Great Britain and Ireland are presented by representatives of the countries, many in national costume, present their flags on the stage together with the United Nations flag. They remain on the stage until the end of the Conference. The three guest speakers – Chris Moon, Ian Woodall and Christina Lamb were inspirational in the way they had overcome adversity, shown courage and perseverence. During the day other Soroptimist business and reports were presented. In the evenings there was musical entertainment and the conference ended with a gala dinner and the installation of new officers. One of
the highlights of the activities was “Bras in the Bay”.
Soroptimists collected approx. 20,000 bras which were donated to Oxfam
down in Cardiff Bay.
Oxfam will take the bras to Senegal where the good ones
will be sold on in the markets or they will be de-consrtructed and the
pieces used again.
Most of the Cwmbran members wore bras decorated to look like crows – on
top of our red fleeces.
These attracted a lot of attention!
The “crows” were the brain child of member Marian, who also made
them.
