Cattery Heating

Having bred cats for over 20 years we have experimented with a variety of heating systems .

Oil filled radiators are very expensive to run unless your cattery is exceptionally well insulated and they are lethal for young kittens as they can easily become trapped between the heating elements. For many years we used tubular heaters linked to thermostats but again these are costly and ineffective unless you have a well insulated cattery. They also take a long while to heat the space. We've used heated igloos - but the transformers don't seem to last very long and once the element has broken they are useless. Electric panel heaters are also very expensive to run!

We now use almost exclusively infra red heated lamps suspended above the cats open beds. These are very easy to fit (just a screw in hook) and the great advantage of using infra red is that it heats the objects (and animals) below the lamp - not the air around them so its much quicker to warm the cats (and keep them warm) and you don't have to spend a fortune on insulation to ensure they are effective, just make sure the area is draft free. Don't use a thermostat as it measures the air temperature, not the temperature of the cat. We keep ours on permanently during the cooler months and find them really useful to warm cold kittens up. Because they heat objects within their lighted area the cats can also move away from the lamp beam easily for comfort.

We are able to source these units at very competitive prices and are offering them for sale at
