Choosing A Kitten
The first consideration when choosing a kitten is whether you just want your kitten as a beautiful and exotic looking family pet or whether you intend to show or breed your cat in the future. If you are looking for a family pet then the two most important considerations when viewing kittens will be temperament and health. Generally Bengal kittens are very playful and love fuss and attention, however, don’t expect them to enjoy being picked up and cuddled by strangers! Watch them carefully to see their different personalities and try to choose one that suits your expectations (all our queens and studs will come and sit on our laps for fuss and attention - so will the kitten you choose when they have got to know you in their new home) All our kittens are raised in the company of our young family. Always look for signs of ill health - sneezing, runny eyes or nose, wheezing, diarrhoea etc.
Nb. If you are considering breeding your kitten be warned - breeding cats may appear to be a profitable business but once the stud fees, food, heating, vets bills and injections, advertising costs, not to mention the time and care involved are taken into account the rewards are little. Most, if not all of the small profits involved are taken up showing, providing specialist accommodation and buying new cats/kittens to develop better breeding lines. When looking for a kitten for showing or
breeding always ask the breeder to point out the good and bad points of
the kittens you are considering. The perfect Cat irrespective of breed has never been bred
(nor will it ever be) and there is room for improvement on even the most
exceptional kittens. A possible show or breeding cat should have no
obvious faults such as a white locket, poorly defined markings etc. Also do bear in mind
All our Kittens are Registered with the GCCF or TICA, Vaccinated, Insured and at least 14 weeks old before they are allowed to leave for their new homes.
Low Generation or Foundation Kittens From time to time you may see for sale F1, F2 or F3 kittens. These numbers refer to how many generations the kitten is removed from the Asian Leopard Cat. We would not advise anyone to buy these early (F1, F2 or F3) generation Bengals as pets. Although there are always individual exceptions they cannot be guaranteed to be fully domesticated and are often nervous, shy and retiring, may not be reliable using litter trays and will not make good pets in the home. In terms of quality - as Bengals have now been bred successfully for several years in the UK the quality of most F4 cats and beyond (from reputable breeders) is excellent - in fact in our opinion they are far more likely to be good examples of the breed than lower generation kittens as there is much greater variation in the quality of lower generation cats. Undoubtedly the keeping and use of lower generation cats still has an occasional place in breeding programmes to introduce new lines in the short term but as household pets they really aren't a sensible option for the majority of people.
