Hypnotic Phenomena
Hypnotic phenomena are not exclusive to the clinical setting. We can
experience all of them throughout the course of our everyday lives,
often without even being aware of them. Below are some examples:
Age Regression:
Feeling younger when criticised, around children or tall people.
Being with parents, or looking at old photographs.
Age Progression:
Looking forward to a holiday of other major event – birthday etc.
Visiting a nursing home.
Time Distortion:
(Positive) A lonely journey seems very long.
Insomnia.
Waiting for a kettle to boil or a phone to ring.
Waiting in a queue.
Waiting alone in the wet.
(Negative) With a good film or book time seems to pass quickly.
Being on holiday.
Waiting with a good friend.
Amnesia:
“It’s on the tip of my tongue”.
Inability to find keys etc.
“Oh, what’s his name?”
Walking into a room and forgetting why you went there.
Someone returns your phone call and you forget the reason for your original
call.
Dissociation:
Feeling you are “outside” a crisis.
Daydreaming.
De’ja’ vous.
Driving on automatic.
Posthypnotic Suggestion:
Advertising.
Parental advice.
Turning off a light automatically although it isn’t on.
