Practitioners - Amy Youngs

Amy Youngs is also a student at ACCAD (Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design) in Ohio USA.

Her work also focusses on the integration and interaction of technology and nature.

The piece I have decided to look at is 'Rearming the Spineless Opuntia '.

This piece involves a breed of cactus that as been bred to remove all of its protecting spines. The artist has built a protective shell that opens and closes, in much the same way as a venus fly trap plant, as people approach the piece.

This is achieved by use of motion detectors and motors which operate the opening and closing of the protective shell.

The interactivity of this installation is provided by the motion sensors and the opening and closing of the protective shell.

A quote from the artist:

'This sculpture embodies my impulse to protect this vulnerable,
human-engineered creation. But it also reveals the folly of protection in its heavy reliance on technology.'
