Practitioners - Ken Rinaldo
Ken Rinaldo is a student at ACCAD (Advanced Computing Center for the
Arts and Design) in Ohio USA.
His work focusses on the intersection between natural and technological
systems.
His art works are influenced by theories on living systems, artificial
life, interspecies communication and the underlying pattern and beauty
inherent in the nature and organization of matter, energy, and information.
The piece I have chosen to look at is 'Autopoesis'.
Autopoiesis is "self making", a characteristic of all living
systems which was defined and refined by Francisco Varella and Humberto
Maturana.
This piece is composed of electronically controlled 'arms', which are
controlled by motion sensors. Each arm is made of grape vine branches,
connected by springs which pivot. On the end of each arm is a lipstick
camera. The arms follow people who walk around the piece, thus creating
the interactive aspect of the piece.
The arms behave individually and as a group.
