Slarti's Guide To....

Ugrading of the Flashrom for a 603e/060

This can be quite a daunting task if you have no real experience of the Amiga OS, but I can assure you that it is far easier than it sounds. Listed below is a step by step guide to succesful installation of a FlashRom upgrade for the 603e/060.

Before proceeding, please note that the usual disclaimers apply. I will not accept responsibilty for you're card exploding, imploding, running away with your wife/husband, the fall of Communism, World War 3, etc.. This is intended as a guide and as always you should rtfm first. :)

1. Using either a Browser or FTP package, download the newest version of the Flashrom upgrade, also get the accompanying versions of the 060 libraries from the Phase5 website.

2. Unarchive the downloaded files to a directory on your Harddrive using lha or lzx.

3. Format a blank floppy and make it bootable. This can be done from the format program or by using the command 'install df0:' after formatting has finished.

4. Copy the file blizppc060update (or 040update if you are using an 040 based card) to the now blank floppy.

5. Install the new versions of 68060 and 68040.library to libs:, follow the instructions accompanying the libraries. It is not as simple as just copying them straight into libs:. Below is the correct method of copying the new libraries, bit make sure you also read the docs that accompany the libraries, as this may change at some point.

(i) Copy 68040.library to libs:68040new.library
(ii) Copy 68040dummy.library to libs:68040.library
(iii) Copy 68060.library to libs:68060.library

6. You are now ready to update the Flashrom. Switch of your machine for atleast 30 seconds, (I'd recommend a minute to be on the safe side).

7. Make sure the floppy you have prepared is in the floppy bay and switch on your machine and hold down 'S' (this disables SCSI) and both mouse buttons to enter the A1200 boot menu.

8. Disable all your Hard-drives and the PCMIA from the menu (all that should be active is the internal Floppy).

9. Make sure the Floppy is in the bay and select 'Boot with no Startup-Sequence' and once again hold down 'S'.

10. Your machine should have booted to the CLI on a normal PAL or NTSC screen. Type blizzppc060update (or 040update for 040 based cards) and wait until the Flash upgrade has finished. This can take anything from about 20 seconds to a minute. DO NOT ABORT THE UPDATE ONCE IT HAS STARTED, IT COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR ACCELERATOR, ALWAYS WAIT FOR IT TO FINISH!

11. Once you are sure the flash update has been completed (It should tell you once it has finished updating), either switch off your machine and reboot or perform a soft reboot via the CTRL L-Amiga R-Amiga key combination.

12. Congratulations, you have just updated the FlashRom on your Bliz 603e.

13. Now e-mail Phase5 and complain about all the bugs you've found ;)
