Pierre Soille received the engineering degree from  the Université de Louvain  in 1988.   Research  on morphological  processing of  digital elevation models  and satellite  mages  provided the material  for the doctorate  degree he  gained in  1992 at  the same  university  and in collaboration with the Centre for Mathematical Morphology of the Ecole des Mines  de Paris.  He then  pursued research on  image analysis and mathematical  morphology at  the CSIRO  Division of  Maths  and Stats, Sydney,  the  Centre  for  Mathematical  Morphology  and  the  Pattern Recognition  Department of  the Fraunhofer-Institut  IPK,  Berlin.  In 1994,  he  co-organized  with  Jean  Serra  the  second  International Symposium on  Mathematical Morphology.  During  the period 1995--1998, he has been  an assistant professor at the Informatics and Production  Engineering  Laboratory (LGI2P)  of  the  Ecole des  Mines d'Alès and  EERIE, Nîmes.   In 1999 he has been research senior scientist at the Silsoe Research Institute, U.K., leading  a project on the application of novel image analysis techniques to agri-food industries.   Pierre is now with the Space Applications Institute, EC Joint Research Centre, located in Ispra near Milano.

His  contributions  to the  analysis  of  images through  mathematical morphology have been  at the basis of the  `Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches'  degree he  received  in March  1997  from the  Université Montpellier  II.    Pierre  worked   on  many  applied   projects  and contributed  to  over  50  research reports  in  books,  international journals and conferences.  These reports are mainly dedicated to image segmentation, interpolation, pattern recognition, shape analysis, fast algorithms and  scientific/industrial applications.
 
Pierre has taught tutorials  on mathematical morphology during the 11th and 14th ICPR conferences as well as during  several other international conferences.  He is the author of the book `Morphological Image Analysis' published both in English and German by Springer-Verlag.
