The pictures below were taken on or near the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers.
First, the walk up to the head of the Franz Josef glacier.
These are three "arty" photos of a waterfall on the way up to the glacier.
A long range view of the glacier
and one close up. Note the 4 foot high sign at the bottom left of the photo.
Onto the Fox glacier where walking was obviously something to do with the utmost caution! The head of this glacier was very different to that of the other one, with the meltwater thundering out of a huge cavern at the head of the glacier.
As it was a clear day we ventured on a helicopter ride up to the top of the two glaciers - we set down on the top of the Fox glacier. Claire obviously liked the experience whereas the pilot (5th photo), who was supposed to keep us entertained with lots of interesting info, was rather less excited by it all!
A couple of views of the glaciers from the far side of Lake Matheson. This viewpoint, for some reason, is known as the view of views. The glaciers were in view for the first 20 seconds that we were here - so only just managed to catch these photos before the clouds rolled in.
Finally, two views on the drive south from the glaciers. First, of sea fog in the late afternoon and then of the clouds sticking to the sides of the mountains the following morning.
