The first three photos are around Queenstown. The first two in fact are taken on the road up to the ski area behind the Remarkables. These views were about 5km up the gravel road - it actually went on for 16km and the gravel left some concerning noises emanating from the car's brakes for the rest of the time we had it. I'm pretty sure the second view in particular in taken very close to where Sam Neill was filmed when he was narrrating some of the BBC series, Space. I supsect that the grass oval just to the left of the runway is where England recently played Otago in a (cricket) tour match. The third photo is overlooking Queenstown looking towards the Remarkables (middle left). This was the view from our table when we ate in the restaurant at the top of the Gondola ride - excellent food for a tenner a head - with the view thrown in for free!
On towards Milford Sound - the first photo is of Claire negotiating a bridge that had notices at each end requesting people crossed one at a time! The second photo is of the road towards Milford Sound - I kept wondering how the road could ever negotiate the ridge ahead and then suddenly found out! The Homer Tunnel was about a mile long, on an incline of about 1 in 20, was unlit, and had water pouring down from the roof for the full length of it. Definitely not your usual cushy English road tunnel!
On to Milford Sound itself. The photos below bely the scale of things there. The mountain on the left of the first photo is, I think, Mitre Peak. Not sure though - so long since we were there! Anyway, if it is Mitre Peak then the mountain rises from sea-level up to 1700m (yep, 5500 feet)! If it isn't Mitre Peak, then the peak is still 5000 feet above sea-level. The last two photos are of a couple of waterfalls that both fell 500 feet or more.
Finally, the wildlife we saw on the cruise down the Sound. Dolphins came along side the boat and raced us whilst the seals basked in the sun.
