| Left photo - a kaka. The first bird I saw on the island and the only time I managed to get any sort of photo of these parrots. | ||
|
These two photos and the one above are of the Stewart Island Robin. I'm not sure how rare it is - not endangered. But only 16 were released onto the island in 2000 so there's not that many of them on Ulva Island. The leg ring is so that their numbers van be monitored. They're renowned for being tame - this one was no exception. I actually missed a few photos because it was too close to focus on! |
||
| My best 2 photos of a red-crowned parakeet. These are quite rare - only found on the small islands around NZ. There were a couple of groups of them flying around all day - I crossed their paths 2 or 3 times - but they were difficult to get anywhere near. | ||
| A heron! | ||
| A couple of photos of a family of oystercatchers. | ||
| Two versions of the same photo of a weka. These birds were everywhere on Ulva Island - probably saw about 50 of them during this day. They were fearless/inquisitive/amusing/daft so I ended up taking photos of virtually everyone I saw! This one was about 5 yards away from where I was sat on the beach. | ||

These 4 photos are of a bell-bird. This has an amazing call - something like R2D2 is probably the best way of describing it! The last 3 photos I managed to get at 355pm - and I was leaving at 4pm so couldn't believe my luck to catch this bird at the last moment. For those that know about these things
- these photos were taken hand-held at max zoom (245mm), at ISO
200 film speed and with a 1/20second exposure. So it was quite
shaded and I'm chuffed how sharp they've come out. |

On my final walk on Stewart Island - 10km each way on the Rakiura Track. First, a fan-tail. |
||
| Next 2 more of a silver-eye - last photo-ed around Lake Waikaremoana. | ||
| 2 photos of a tui. Note the white throat feathers. This was another R2D2 like creature - the guide-book describes its call as a mixture of bell-like notes,harsh clicks, barks, cackles and wheezes! | ||
| Two photos of a Kingfisher. | ||
| And two of a New Zealand pigeon - I think the first one fancied its chances with me - it strutted its stuff past me at least three times!! | ||
| A couple of a gull - by this stage I was just trying to get my species count as high as possible! | ||
| Left - the gull being disturbed by an oystercatcher and right almost a really good photo on the oystercatcher and its mate taking flight. | ||
| Final one - not a gull, but the Shy Mollymawk. This photo was taken whilst stood by the bar on the catamaran ferry on the way back to the mainland. A door was open close to the bar so I thought I'd have a go at photoing this bird which was swooping from side to side behind the boat - the bar staff thought I was mad until I showed them this effort. |
