If you can, don't get bored until you get past the waterfall photos!

Sunset outside the conference hotel, with fishponds inthe foreground, then the beach, then the sea and then sun!

 Left: as above

Right: sunset on a beach up the coast (Mauna Kea resort?)

 View from my hotel room.

Left: Mauna Kea from the hotel

Right: View from Pololulu lookout. I *think* that the furthest headland is the far side of the Waipio Valley (10 miles distant).

Polulu Valley views - looks like the left hand one could have done with being taken horizontally!

Left: View from my inner tent door at 1am whilst staying at Arnott's Lodge, Hilo. The flashes of light near the outer door are raindrops. My sandal is an inch deep in water - the whole inner tent was afloat in fact! The tent did withstand this waterproofness test though - once I moved into the middle of it so that all sides could remain afloat that is! My guess is that there was 6 inches of rain during the storm - earlier in the evening near the start of the rainstorm I'd left my saucepan out to rinse and it was already overflowing mid-way through the storm!

Right: the morning after - rain everywhere yet still got a glimpse of Maun Kea from Hilo (in the South East of the Island)

Later the same day - views at South Point (SW of the island) and the most southerly point in the USA. One of the wettest poits on this day too!

A second trip to South Point a few days later. This is where I saw whales breaching whilst walking along to....

the Green sands beach. This is the only photo I took here - all the bathing costumes are indeed flesh coloured - so I wasn't so sure that they'd believe I was trying to capture the subtle green hues of the beach if I took many more photos than this!

Two photos of a waterfall near the Pololulu valley lookout. The only way to the waterfall was a 20 minute walk straight up the stream it was feeding! Not sure what the waterfall is called anymore - it was in the excellent "big island revealed" guidebook - and that was a casualty of my Waipio Valley swimfest!

Me after walking back from the waterfall - I hadn't fallen in - it was another thunderstorm (honest!).

Just to prove that I did drive around Los Angeles for a few hours.....

Left: Venice beach. Right: 2pm hurtling on the I405 southbound towards the airport.
