The Tongariro Crossing

The Tongariro Crossing is known as the "best one day walk in New Zealand".

I have to say it wasn't too bad for the first couple of hours.....

NOTE - stitched photos will fill depth of screen when viewed full size - so watch out for your browser automatically shrinking them to fit width-wise!

4 astro photos taken from my motel in National Park. The Milky Way was bright, but perhaps not quite as bright as on these photos! (ISO3200, 30second exposures)

The bright star cluster above the white house is the Large Magellanic Cloud. The one to the left of that is the small Magellanic Cloud - the two satellite galaxies to the Milky Way
Onto the Tongariro Crossing - and my first view of Mt. Ngauruhoe.

And at the base of the dormant volcano - the summit is 600m up from where this photo was taken
Stitched photo of the summit and crater - Mt. Ruapehu is the snow capped peak to the middle left, whilst Mt. Taranaki is just visible middle right about 80 miles distant

Photo actually taken on the way up - it felt steeper than it looked!

Photo similar to that two rows above. This time in the afternoon - sat on a stretcher. My wee tumble had occurred at....well, take a look at the photo!
Me on the make shift stretcher! I'm indebted to Alex (left), Chris and Thomas for staying with me as I slid down the scree on my backside. Last 100metres of descent they stretchered me to here (together with Ross taking the photo). Thanks again guys!

Photo care of the Air Ambulance of my arrival at Rotorua hospital
A hospital room with a view of the hot steaming vents of Rotorua

15 seconds of fame - this was in the Sunday paper I was reading the night after my operation

 and again the following day
leg in splint and bandaging back in Wellington      and how it looks now 5 and a half weeks later. You can hardly tell there were 15 stitches in there anymore! Email me if you want to see what it looked like when I got to Rotorua Hospital - it was so ugly that the air ambulance crew thought it worthy of a photo!!
