Notes:

  • Margaret Harries was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Harries (daughter of Hopkin Harries) and Morgan Rees. Morgan Rees was a 38 year old married man and farmer who lived nearby in the same parish, so marriage would have been out of the question.

In 1871, Margaret, aged 4,  was living with her mother Margaret in Cross Hands. Margaret Snr was working as a servant for her  future husband, David Vaughan, a widower. Living with them were David's 3 children, Elizabeth, aged 12, William, aged 9, and Ann aged 1.

By 1881 Margaret, then aged 14, was emplyed by Thomas Treharne, a widower aged 34, as a nursemaid. Thomas had 2 young children, William aged 5 and Mary Ann aged 2. Margaret seems to be very young to have the responsibility for 2 young children. They were living in the Gwendraith Arms in Llannon, and Thomas was a Tailor and Licensed Victualler. Also living with them was another servant, Catherine Griffiths.

Thomas had probably been married to Ann Thomas in Dec quarter 1874. Ann died in Sep quarter 1879, possibly as a result of childbirth.

In Dec quarter 1881, Thmas remarried, to his servant Catherine Griffiths. Catherine would have been about 19 or 20 & Thomas about 40. A child, Sarah J, was born about 1881, and was in all liklihood the daughter of Catherine, and she may have been the reason for the marriage. A further child, Matilda, was born to the marriage in Dec quarter 1883.

By the 1991 census, Thomas is again a widower, and Margaret Harries is still living with him as a servant, in the Gwendraeth Arms, Llannon. Living with Thomas are his children William aged 15, Mary Ann aged 12, Sarah J aged 10, and a further child Matilda, aged 8. It is not yet known when Catherine died.

Thomas clearly didn't like the celibate life, and on 20th February 1892, he married Margaret Harries. Margaret's father is not named in teh marriage certificate, which is consistent with her being illegitimate. The witnesses to the wedding were Anthony H Thomas, and David Vaughan. David Vaughan was Margaret's stepfather.

In 1901, Thomas and Margaret are still together in Llannon, and living with thier children  William aged 25, now a Tailor's cutter, Mary, aged 22, a dressmaker, Sarah, aged 19, a barmaid (presumably in the Gwendraith Arms), Matilda aged 17, an elementary school teacher, and Margaret aged 8.
