...... Emil Meyer, a ruthless cattleman, is trying to scare away a bunch of farmers who have put up fences around land he wants. He looks like winning, until Shane turns up.
He'd stopped for a drink at one of the farms. Then Meyer's men had arrived, looking threatening. He'd intervened, and sent them away.
The story takes off from there.
In the famous film version, Shane was played by Alan Ladd
