Derwentwater from Surprise View
Tuesday March 29th 1988
Despite the numbers of tourists and cars heading for Watendlath, Ashness Bridge is still a classic viewpoint, and an even better one can be found by walking up the road and through the woods to Surprise View.
We were once returning from Watendlath, having walked over Walla Crag, Bleaberry Fell, High Seat and High Tove, when I was asked by a group of German tourists to take a photo of them with the view in the background. This forging of Anglo-German relations made us miss the boat to Keswick by a matter of seconds, and we had a long, weary trudge back by the lake shore.
