Choosing A Campsite
The following are points to look out for
when choosing a campsite:
Permission
not only to camp, but also to use wood
fires.
Ground
should be well drained. A slight slope
helps rain water to run away (particularly if the soil is clay); |
never camp near rushes or reeds.
Wood
trees available should be suitable for
both kindling and cooking (eg silver birch and oak -
a combination which are often found together).
Prevailing wind
can be found by looking for green moss on
the bark of trees - this side of the tree experiences most water (ie rain)
and, therefore, faces the oncoming prevailing wind.
Food
farm or shop should be nearby for a ready
supply of fresh milk and other perishable food.
Water
pure supply for drinking (eg a tap in a
farmer's yard).
Aspect
pleasant
view and good scenery are desirable; |
sheltered
from wind, but not so much that the fire does not obtain a good draught; |
whilst
at the same time not hidden from the sun.
Toilets
flush type if possible (eg outside
toilets in a farmer's yard). If not, chemical type.
Menu
varied |
not all fried.
Leave
nothing but thanks at the end of the
camp.
Thanks to everyone who helped:
farmer for the field; |
Mummy for help with menu & shopping; |
Daddy for providing transport.
Forget
not to include on
your shopping list:
pepper, |
sauces, |
vinegar, |
Brillos, |
washing
up liquid, |
matches, |
etc. |
