Sheffield is located in the northern half of England, in the County of Yorkshire.

The City is surrounded on all sides by some of the finest countryside in England. To one side there are the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and the haunting Yorkshire Moors, while on another side boarders the picturesque Derbyshire Peak District.  To the south of the City can be found the Lincolnshire Wolds, a small but fine  County area.

Located within easy distance are the Counties of Cheshire, Lancashire, (Yorkshire folk try not to talk about Lancastrian's ! ), Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

Sheffield is some 160 miles from the Capital City of London,  220 miles from Scotland's Capital City of Edinburgh, and 180 miles from the Welsh Capital City, Cardiff.

The M1 motorway passes close to the City, and many major highways serve the area, making Sheffield very accessible by road.  The City is on the main-line railway link, and more recently, a new Airport has been opened in the Tinsley area. Aimed mainly at the business sector,  there are daily schedule flights  to Brussels, Paris, Ireland. and London's Docklands Airport.  A limited charter flight service to Jersey has also been introduced. There are plans to increase the services from the airport in the future.

The new Supertram.

In the City itself, many bus companies compete for passengers. Once Sheffield had a good reputation for having the cheapest public transport fares in the country, those days have long passed however, and like many Cities, competition is fierce amongst the various bus operators.   In the last couple of years Sheffield has seen the return of the Tram to the City streets. Running from various City suburbs, the introduction of the modern tram system is an effort by the City Fathers  to persuade motorists to leave their car at home when visiting the City Center, much of which is now pedestrian precincts.

The City has a park and ride scheme which is well signposted. There is also a number of, ' cycle only ' lanes near to the main shopping areas. A complete cycle route map is available from Sheffield City Council.

Work is also in progress to renovate the canal system that runs into the City itself. A new wharf has been build, along with a new modern hotel,   restaurant / pub , and modern office accommodation is making this area very popular.
