The Don Valley Stadium.


Sport is well represented in Sheffield, catering for a wide variety of interests.One of the finest stadiums in the country can be found at The Don Valley Stadium on Attercliffe Road. Built originally to be the venue for  The World Student Games, it now hosts many National and International events.

The British Olympics   Association  have recently chosen Sheffield as  it's headquarters for training, and will work alongside the Don Valley stadium to develop the future British Olympic competitors.

The Sheffield Eagles Rugby Football Club use the stadium as their home ground.

Built at the same time as the Don Valley stadium, was the Pond Forge Leisure Centre. Some of the events of the Student Games were held in this venue, which contains an Olympic size pool, as well as recreational pools and water slides. Pond Forge has hosted many championship events in the short time it has been built, and like the Don Valley stadium, is a credit to Sheffield.

The Sheffield Sharks Basketball Team attracts enthusiastic crowds to Pond Forge Leisure Centre.

There are two major football clubs in the city, Sheffield Wednesday FC. who play in the Premier League. The, " Owls " play at one of countries leading football grounds, Hillsborough stadium.  At some time, most major football games have been staged at this magnificent ground.

Across the City, Sheffield United FC. have their ground at Bramall Lane.                       Nicknamed the, " Blades ", to reflect the city's historic links with cutlery, they  are currently playing in the First Division of the Football League, and there is great rivalry between the two clubs supporters.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club use to play matches on a regular basis at Bramall Lane, but now they only play the occasional match in Abbeydale Park.

Speedway racing is held at the Owlerton Stadium, Penistone Road, just further along the road from Hillsborough stadium.  Greyhound racing and Stock Car racing is also held at  Owlerton.

The Sheffield, "   Steelers "  Ice Hockey Club have a loyal band of supporters who attend matches at the Arena in Broughton Lane.

Other sports to hold regular events include  American Football.

Climbers are well catered for with the EDGE Climbing Centre in John Street, and the Foundry Climbing Centre in Mowbray Street. 

Sheffield also has two Ten Pin  Bowling alleys, and several sports halls that are well supported by the public.  A full size Ice Ring can be found in Queens Road.

One of the most unique venues in the City is an  all year round Ski  slope at Parkwood Springs. Europe's largest artificial ski resort , it boasts eight pistes, nursery slopes, a ski lift and a toboggan run. Floodlighting offers the chance to enjoy the experience of night time skiing.
