Marko Martin was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1975. He began his musical studies at the age of eight, justifying early promise by winning an International Competition for Young Pianists in Czechoslovakia, aged fifteen, and a year later gaining a similar distinction in Kharkov, Ukraine. In 1993 he entered the Estonian Academy of Music to study with Peep Lassmann, a pupil of the revered Russian pianist Emil Gilels, and in that same year won First Prize at an International Competition in Riga, Latvia. In 1996 Marko came to London to further his studies with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music, where his outstanding talent was recognised by the offer of several scholarships including one from the Corporation of London. He was awarded the Concert Recital Diploma - the Premier Prix of his College - a year later. Amidst a string of competition and festival successes in Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and England, he made a major breakthrough in 1998 winning 4th Prize in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in the USA. As a recitalist and concerto soloist, Marko has toured Estonia, Latvia, Scandinavia, Germany, France and the UK, with a repertoire including concertos by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich. A forthcoming highlight will be his appearance at the Barbican Concert Hall in London playing Brahms' Second Piano Concerto.
