Things to do around Kellah

Kellah is nicely central to many interesting places around the North of England.

Hadrian's Wall

Many visitors visit this area to walk along Hadrians Wall, and visit the numerous Roman antiquities in the area.

Shown here is a point on the wall roughly north of Haltwistle, the tree shown featured in the film 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves'.

The wall itself is is an exciting place to walk having several Roman ruins and high points that stand up way above the countryside around and giving excellent long distance views.

Those keen on walking will have a pleasant day along the wall, and for the less energetic easy access to the wall can be gained at several points along, such as Housesteads with it's museum and extensive ruins.

There are also a number of Roman ruins which are even easier to access such as the Roman fort at Vindolanda, and a number of smaller museums and visitors centers along the roads near the wall.

Countryside

You don't have to walk 'The Wall' to find some interesting countryside, The area provides an excelent range, from rolling moorland to farmland and everything in between, with many paths including the Pennine way, which runs close to Kellah.

As well as the cows and sheep (which you would expect to find), there is a great deal of wildlife, there are no longer many areas of England where you can still see Red Squirrels in the wild, well they can be found at Kellah. The photograph shown here was taken on the farm.

Villages and Towns

There are several small towns in the area that are well worth a visit, the nearest being Haltwhistle, a pleasant walk or short car journey away, there are several more in the area such as Brampton, which is a car journey away, and a little larger having a weekly market.

Hexham, the largest town in the area has the Border Museum, Abbey and cattle market.

A little to the south is Alston, a quaint little town with a preserved steam railway and several interesting gift shops, This has been used as the setting for a number of films, most recently the BBCs adaptation of Oliver Twist.

Cities

If you want is to visit cities, Carlisle is easily accessible by car, being around 30 minutes drive away. An attractive walled city with a castle, several interesting museums and a Cathedral with a spectacular ceiling, it has a well laid out pedestrianised shopping area, with a full range of High Street shops, but just off this relatively modern area are the small old streets, that you would expect from an ancient town.

To the east is Durham, an old and interesting city with many historic features, well worth a visit, a little larger than Carlisle and generally with an older feel, there are many things to see here including a Cathedral and the University.

Other Visitor Attractions

There is plenty of countryside around, and many walks, including the Pennine Way which passes very close to Kellah.

Just a short distance from Kellah is Lambley Viaduct. The railway which used to run over this huge structure has now been removed, the resultant path allowing access to some easy walking through the countryside, with occasional seats and artistic statues, the crowning glory of this walk is to look over the countryside from the top of Lambley Viaduct itself.

Nenthead Mine Museum -effectively the history of Lead mining in the area.

Talkin Tarn - a local visitor attraction less than 30 minutes away by car. Have a gentle walk around the lake or hire a boat.

The above is just a selection of things to see and places to visit in the vicinity of Kellah. Cumbria and the Lakes are within easy reach as are the Scottish Borders, and Kielder Forest (The largest man made forest in Europe). A full range of leaflets are available from any of the many Tourist Information Offices and in the cottages at Kellah itself.
