Altan

While Altan are away, on their seemingly permanent tour, take a look at their Official Site. It might satisfy the craving for a while.

You're going to get very familiar with Ceolas, they have an entry for almost everyone in the Celtic music world! Here's Altan's entry

IMusic.com has an Altan showcase currently up.

Rambles.net have an album review of Harvest Storm

Mary Black

There are no frontiers to this woman's talent.

Mary Black has a fair amount sites, as you would think a singer of her calibre has. Still, start off at an excellent Unofficial page which has loads of info, plus sound and video clips to linger over.

There's an IMusic showcase on Mary, too.

And then, surf off to the Mary Black Links Pages for a magical mystery tour - though some of those links could do with updating!

Jackson Browne

Folk, rock and much more from one of America's cultural icons. His official page is at www.jacksonbrowne.com of course. A choice of Flash or HTML sites, which makes a nice change.... and the site is an award-winner for designer Trevor Dodd. You can play with Jackson's face, choose which music samples to hear, and change the levels of interactivity on the Flash site!

The best unofficial site is The Jackson Browne Unofficial Homepage, which is updated frequently, and contains a biography, discography, media clips, photos and a trivia quiz.

For more music, go to The Road And The Sky - Jackson Browne streaming audio, all day every day. Great background listening as you surf. And an incitement to go out and buy more albums, every time you go "oh, that's a great song!" ;o)

Celtic Connection

There's a great up-and-coming young band in Canada, called Celtic Connection (nothing to do with the UK-released compilation album or TV/radio programmes). They have lots of info and sound samples on their official site. Take a look and a listen - they're going to be big!

The Chieftans

If anyone defines Celtic traditional music in the 20th century, it's this lot! And they seem to bring out the best in others, too. Their latest album "Fire In The Kitchen" is a must-have...

They have an Official Page with an astounding discography, news and reviews.

Ceolas of course have a page on them.

And there's a biography, surprisingly enough, at Walt Disney Records. Seems a cartoon is forthcoming. Paddy the Pooh?

Clannad

Clannad are probably the best-known Celtic group in the world, with a wide range of styles from the traditional 'sean-nos' to rock, and many film soundtracks under their collective belts.

Their unofficial site is The Clannad Webpage featuring info, FAQ, tourdates, lyrics in Gaelic and English, and audio clips.

And another good one at an clann as dobhar

Again, IMusic hve a showcase page on the band.

And there's a Dirty Linen article here, too.

Great Big Sea

Hey, you've got to look at this one first! It's mine, all mine! Great Big Sea UK It started off as just a page of photos taken at Dingwalls, London in 1998. Then it exploded! I have reviews, biography, discography, silly stuff and serious, and a load of great links to more GBS stuff and Newfoundland background.

And you definitely want to look at the Online Kitchen Party the band's official website. Newly and brilliantly overhauled, it now features sound clips and a Tour Diary from the b'ys themselves. And you can drop into the Chatroom and say "hi" to me and all the other GBS fans.

Or, if you're saying "Who the hell are they?", have a look and listen to Mike's Great Big Download Page, without which I would no longer be sane (we don't see GBS as often as we'd like on this side of the world)

Fran has a great big site at GBS Boston. If you think I've got lots of photos, think again, and look here!

Check into Missy's site at Rant & Roar for .... well, everything you can think of, really, including a huge list of links to other GBS sites.

There are lots of other great fan pages, which I have no room for ... so look out for the GBS Webring logo on some of these, and the Fan and Web links stuff on my own site (above). Happy browsing!

Fiddle, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums and keyboards combine to define their high energy sound. Most of the material is song based but with the fiddles featuring throughout. The sets of tunes are there as well - both slow airs showing off the skill of the fiddler and the fast tunes."

The Saw Doctors

A great band from Tuam in County Mayo, as they are at great pains to let people know!

They have an Official Site here which, sorry to say, is not as good as some of the fan's sites!

Here we have Up The West which is reputedly the oldest Saw Doctors site on the Web. It doesn't look like it has been updated for a while, though it's still worth a look.

This one is better - D'ya Wanna Hold My Guitar? is an officially approved unofficial site, which makes just as much sense on first read as "Hay Wrap" does to a first time listener. I think I know what they mean. It has lyrics and chords, and a chatroom in which you can Blah Blah Blah with other fans!

And lastly, I've posted a review of the Cambridge Corn Exchange concert on 7th December 1998, plus two very rough photos (though not bad, considering I took them from way back on the balcony).

Eleanor Shanley

Ex De Dennan singer, she is one of the best Celtic female voices on the road today. As her management says: "Her roots are in traditional music but her interpretations are decidedly contemporary. Since her early days with De Dannan it has become clear that she has a brilliant voice, the kind of voice that only comes to the fore very rarely."

There's not a lot up so far, but go to Grapevine Records for a biography.

Paul Simon

From the first self-titled album in 1961 to The Capeman in 1998, Paul Simon's career has spanned an incredible 37 years, and is still going strong. Despite this, there aren't many websites dealing with the man and his music.

Hero Up The Pop Charts features links to articles and reviews on both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

Really - no introduction needed.

The best page I have found so far is Reinhard Zierke's page which contains a band history (and there's a lot of it!), musician biography, discography, sheet music, tours and links to other sites.

I occasionally write/photograph for Traditional Music Maker Magazine. Their new website is up and running, so check in here for a preview and subscription details. NEW! - tune in and listen online with streaming Tradmusic! New artists can submit their own tracks for play.

The obvious two for any oul' hippy - Folk Roots and, of course, Dirty Linen, with loads of archived interviews & stuff.

Another great online magazine site, with an emphasis on traditional Canadian music, is Rambles. Reviews and interviews galore on this site, loads of archived articles. I recommend you take a look - but allow yourself plenty of time!

Folk Interest

I found a great listing of Folk Artistes listed by country. Some of the links are broken, though.

Folk Music On The Net is a great starting place for any research....

...as is this site, which is mainly links.

Music Sojourn has a site full of streaming audio programs, "covering many diverse styles and formats not available from traditional outlets" to use their own blurb.

Harmony Ridge Music has RealAudio clips of female folk/world artistes, and others.

Look for folk lyrics and audio clips at Mudcat's search page - there's loads of them!

A large online music archive exists at The Bees Knees.

Celtic links go léor at John Francis' site, both music and culture.

And believe me, Angus Og's Every Celtic Thing On The Web site is well worth a look, especially for that warped Celtic sense of humour. Has VERY annoying pop-up ads, though.
