Teign Valley Model Flying Club - Model Air Display
as part of :-
Newton Abbot - Festival of Transport
The Festival of Transport was held over the weekend 13 - 14 May, to celebrate the Millennium, and to commemorate the Air Races held in the area in the 1930s. The Festival comprised many varied displays of aircraft, full size and model, full size railway exhibits and excursions and model railways, boats, again full size and model, and many vehicle exhibits of all kinds. No doubt much will be written to appear in the appropriate magazines in the months to come. The event was over a year in planning by many hard working people and covered exhibits and displays at several venues. The TVMFC part was to stage a model air pageant of aircraft of the Golden Era up to the 1960s. The display was held at our home site on Newton Abbot Racecourse.

The weather for the weekend come up exactly as ordered on Saturday with brilliant warm sunshine all day, with a steady breeze off the estuary straight down the strip, Sunday was a misty day with low cloud, but this did not deter the pilots who continued their display flying in spite of the visibility, the conditions did slowly improve during the day. Our visiting pilots gave a wonderful and continuous display throughout the weekend.

TVMFC wish to extend very warm thanks to the modellers who came to support this event. We had visiting pilots from as far away as Doncaster, Bristol, Fleet, Alton, Bude, Saltash Plymouth, Exeter, St. Austell and one helicopter pilot from our own Newton Abbot Helicopter Club. The Club would like to express our appreciation to all the flyers who turned out to make this event such a fine success for us. We made a lot of new friends over the weekend and offer a welcome to all of them to return and fly with us at any time. This was our first public display but I am sure it will not be our last.

The sight and sound of the large scale models in the air went a long way to recreating the look of the 20s and 30s. At one point, with several planes flying, a charter train ran along the rail track at the edge of the Racecourse pulled by the Flying Scotsman locomotive, and the image was complete. The Tiger Moths and Comper Swift aloft, and the smoke and sound from the veteran steam engine made a very reminiscent sight, just as the organisers of the event had no doubt planned.

The crowd line was pretty full throughout both days. As mentioned earlier, Saturday was a dream flying day with warm sunshine, and the crowd made the most of it, with many people sitting and watching for quite some time. During Sunday when the weather was not so good, with a persistent mist, they were treated to displays by a Fun Fly, a Trainer demonstrating the buddy box system and various other non scale planes that the pilots had brought along just in case. Several pilots responded to requests to put their large model up "one more time" for the benefit of people who saw them on the ground but missed the flights. To see the big Piper Cub being displayed very slowly at less than 30 feet, , or the aerobatics of the Cap231and Lazer 200, the sight of several Tiger Moths and Chipmunks in the air together were a joy to see. The beautiful Ryan STA gave several displays and confirmed the saying "big models fly better" The lone helicopter was also a predictable crowd puller, a different model was exhibited on each day, and these were skilfully flown giving a very able demonstration

The static display was also very well supported by members of local Clubs , the Red Post group, our own club members and many other modellers and again we thank you all for your unstinting support over the two days. During Sunday we counted 62 models in the static line, I hope the photographs do justice to them.

We would also like to express heartfelt thanks for the sterling work put in by the wives of some of our members, who turned out to support us by selling Draw tickets for the Club. Theirs was a continuous effort throughout the two days and we plan to put the proceeds of the sales towards a new mower - thank you all.
The Draw would not have been possible without the kind and generous donations we received from our local model shops, and we extend thanks to Ben Godfrey of Bekra RC in Newton Abbot, and Martyn Liddon of Delta Models in Exeter, for their wonderful support and for the two kits and fuel that they gave us. Members of the Club also donated prizes to the Draw - thank you all.
And yet more thanks - to Roger Marks and Rob Madle for cutting and rolling the strip. To Peter Lock - our "Prime Mover" - for all his very hard work and for stepping in at the last moment to give a very entertaining performance as the commentator on the PA. To the Club members who manned the Transmitter control cabin - no hitches at any time using a two peg system, a Green GO peg to the pilot to fly with, and Red STOP peg in place of the green one until it was returned. And finally to everybody else who turned up to do whatever was required.
Whilst this outdoor display was going on, our Indoor Electric Flyers were giving a very well attended demonstration of indoor flight, at the venue in Teignmouth. This was ably organised by our Secretary Bernie Northway, with the welcome assistance of his indoor colleagues from The Torbay & District Radio Flying Club, namely Cliff Harvey and Peter Rogers. This was a very well turned out event and proved a popular one with the spectators, who did not seem to able to get enough of these lovely models. A full write up with photographs is available on the Torbay Club web site
There has also been a write up in the Indoor Electric Flyer magazine. Thank you chaps for a wonderful effort.
There has been a rumour that Newton Abbot Council are considering staging the event on a two or three year cycle. However, based on the success of the weekend, we are planning a Fun Fly next year, so keep an eye on the "Where to go" / "Diary dates" sections of the modelling magazines, and our web site, for a good day out in glorious Devon.
