  1. 1861 Somersham, Huntingdonshire
  2. 1871 Census - Dean Road, Newchurch, Lancashire
  3. 1881 Census - I think I have the right James as he was born in he right year and born in Somersham. This give us a name for a wife, but not the one I was expecting, however she is born in Gewnnap, Cornwall and you will see that the wife of John one of his brothers was also born there so I suspect they were sisters. Caroline had died by 1891. The were living at Forest Holme, Higher Booths, Lancashire. They had a daughter Annie BATMAN, aged 1 born Water, Lancashire. As Caroline died soon after the 1881 Census it is possible that James married a three times. I had deleted the second marriage, but have now put it in as a second wedding possibility.
  4. 1891 Census - 18 Spring Gardens, Newchurch, Lancashire. Again I think there is a mistake in relationships on this Census, but I think I have, by looking for James BATEMAN found the family of Ann, however they put James down as a nephew which he would not have been, he would have been a brother-in-law, but I still think this is the correct family. They are living in Spring Gardens, Newchurch where the family were living on the 1881 Census. Ann and James are both born in Somersham, Huntingdonshire. I know now there were two other BATEMAN families from Somersham, a George and a James both I think brothers of William above. If it came through their families it could be a nephew, but I think the ages and the place rule out this possibility. Now for the details of the family: Richard Gregory was 42 a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, his wife Ann was 39 born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. the children were: William James GREGORY, age 16, a Cotton Weaver, down as being born in Somersham, but again I think this is a mistake and he was born in Newchurch, Lancashire, just ditto's under his mother's name before it turns over the page, Alice A GREGORY age 14, a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Amelia GREGORY, aged 12 a Cotton Spinner, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Mary Han? GREGORY, aged 10 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Sarah GREGORY, aged 8 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Bertha GREGORY, aged 6 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire. Then there is James BATEMAN, a widower down as I say as a Nephew, which I do not think he was, aged 31, a Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, and Willie BATEMAN, aged 6 down as a Cousin who I think is the son of James BATEMAN, a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire
  5. 1901 Census - I have James BATEMAN on this Census, his wife Margaret is a lot older than him. They have children which are older than if born on the 1891 Census. This leads to a query about who I have as a first wife. However I found James as a Widower on the 1891 Census, so I think at least some of the children are from a first marriage of Margaret. They are living at 883 Primrose Terrace, Rawtenstall formerly Newchurch, Lancashire. James BATEMAN was 42 a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. His wife Margaret BATEMAN is 53 born Ireland. The children were: Willie BATEMAN aged 16 Warehouse (possibly Carpet), born Lamb, Lancashire, Sarah BATEMAN, aged 12, a Teaser for Woollen Printer, born Lamb, Lancashire, Barbara, age 8, born Lamb, Lancashire, Charles M ??? (McAbeter?- Ancestry.com interpretation) BATEMAN, aged6 born Lamb, Lancashire, Margaret Hamilton BATEMAN, age 3 born Lamb, Lancashire and Betty Peacock BATEMAN, age 2 months, born Lamb, Lancashire. The names of the last children might just give us a clue to the mother's maiden names). Having got further with this family and finding what I believe are the marriage and death dates of James's wives I think that Willie is his son by his second marriage. Sarah I think is a child of Margaret McALISTER's previous marriage, but the rest of the children are of James and Margaret/ I cannot find McAlister on the Census's that matches although there are several Margaret McAlister's born Ireland on the Census. There is one in Barrow-in-Furness which could fit the bill, but she is still married on the 1891 Census and as they married in June quarter 1891 I think it is unlikely. Perhaps it is not McAlister, see child Charles M above where Ancestry.com has it as McAbeter which now having found Margaret's previous name I think this is what this represents. DOes this mean that somewhere a Hamilton and a Peacock also involves previous marriages.
  6. The BMD site appears to give a marriage name for John BATEMAN's wife, but although a marriage comes up for James BATEMAN he is the only person that appears. On the theory that both wives were born in the same place in Cornwall, it is possibly that James's wife was also a WILLIAMS
  7. This has ended up as a very complex chart, I think I could go further finding the children, but I also think that the details need verifying before I go any further.

The idea of these charts is to give the same information that appears in the research we have done and put together in various books. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
