  1. 1851 High Street, Somersham, Huntingdonshire. Also at the same address was James BATEMAN, father, Age 69 years, widower, Ag Lab, infirm parish relief and George PAXTON, brother? Age 17 years Ag Lab born Somersham, Huntingdonshire
  2. 1861 Somersham, Huntingdonshire
  3. Father - James BATEMAN
  4. 1881 Spring Gardens, Newchurch, Lancashire
  5. 1841 High Street, Somersham, Huntingdonshire
  6. 1871 Census - Dean Road, Newchurch, Lancashire
  7. 1871 Census - Dean Road, Newchurch, Lancashire, William was married, he was 22, a Railway Porter, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his wife was Sarah BATEMAN age 21 a Cotton Sally Minder born Newchurch, Lancashire; There were other BATEMAN's in Newchurch, also born in Somersham but not of this family, I would think either William had come first and then a brother of his or possibly the other way round. James was the Head of the other family born 1823.
  8. 1881 Census - 16 Hibson St, Great & Little Marsden, Lancashire. William and Sarah now had children, William BATEMAN, age 5 a Scholar, born Chivegar, Lancashire, James BATEMAN, age 3, born Nelson, Lancashire and Ellen A BATEMAN, age 1 born Nelson, Lancashire.
  9. 1891 Census - I found this on the Census by search for people born in Somersham but living in Lancashire. It was purely by chance, but is correct. As you will see John OGDEN is about 19 years older than his wife. However living with them is Ann BATEMAN, widow, age 66, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. This is most interesting to us as she was a WHEATON before marriage. There were only the three of them at the address - 15 Burnley Road, Newchurch, Lancashire. This means the rest of the family have to be found.
  10. I have found Mary on the 1881 Census after searching for her children having found the family on the 1891 Census. She is down as being born in Amersham, Huntingdonshire, but when you look at it is Somersham, and of course Amersham in not in Huntingdonshire. She was Head on the 1891 Census, so her husband had died. Firstly Note 10 deals with the 1881 Census and then I will add Note 11 for the 1891 Census and will at some time add a new chart for this family. Living at St John ???, Barrowford Booth, Lancashire. William NUTTALL was 36, a Carter, born Burnley, Lancashire, his wife Mary NUTTALL was 36 (Carters wife crossed through) born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, their children were Ellen A NUTTALL aged 8 Scholar, born Burnley, Lancashire, Ellis (s0n) age 7 Scholar, born Burnley, Lancashire, May H NUTTALL aged 4 Scholar, born Nelson, Lancashire, Alice NUTTALL, age 2 born Barrowford, Lancashire and Sarah NUTTALL aged 1 also born Barrowford, Lancashire.
  11. 1891 Census - 14 Halshead Lane, Barrowford, Lancashire. Mary NUTTALL, was Head, a Widow, aged 46 born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, her children were, Ellen A NUTTALL, aged 18 a Cotton weaver, born Burnley, Lancashire, Ellis NUTTALL, son aged 17 a Cotton Weaver, born Burnley, Lancashire, May H NUTTALL, aged 14 a Cotton Weaver, born Nelson, Lancashire, Alice NUTTALL, aged 12 a Cotton Weaver, born Barrowford, Lancashire, Sarah NUTTALL, aged 10, a Cotton Weaver, born Barrowford, Lancashire, Margaret NUTTALL, aged 7 a Scholar, born Barrowford, Lancashire. And just to prove I have the right family there was a Sarah BATEMAN, niece aged 2, born Dean, Lancashire.
  12. 1891 Census - 13 Clifford Street, Great and Little Marsden, Nelson, Lancashire - William was 42 a Carter, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his wife Sarah, was 41 a Cotton Weaver, born, Bacup, Lancashire, his children on this Census were: William BATEMAN, aged 15, a Cotton Weaver, born Nelson, Lancashire, James BATEMAN, aged 13, a Cotton Weaver, born Nelson, Lancashire, Ellen A BATEMAN aged 11, born Nelson, Lancashire, Hannah BATEMAN, aged 6 also born Nelson, Lancashire. They had two lodgers, Mary BULLOCK, aged 28, a Cotton Weaver, born Great Harwood, Lancashire, and possibly her daughter, Eliz A BULLOCK aged 3, born Blackburn, Lancashire
  13. I have found a Thomas BATEMAN on the 1891 Census. They have his second name down as HINTON, on Ancestry.com, but looking at it I think it is WHEATON, we had the initial down as a W and his mothers maiden name was WHEATON. If this is correct as I think it is he is living at 69 Vale Street, Great Marsden Lancashire. The Head of the House is a Mary Ann WOOD, aged 39 a Weaver, born, Milford, Derbyshire, with her is her sister, Annie Caroline BATEMAN, married, aged 27 a weaver, also born Milford, Derbyshire, under her is our Thomas Wheaton BATEMAN, married, son-in-law age 26 a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. I do not think the relationship is correct, I think is should be brother-in-law.
  14. 1891 Census - 11 Castle Street, Stoneholme, Burnley, Lancashire. Charles BATEMAN was married, he was 29 a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham (Summersham) Huntingdonshire. his wife was Alice H BATEMAN aged 29 a Cotton Weaver, born Bacup, Lancashire, living with them was  Alice MADEN, mother-in-law, a widow, aged 64 born Stackstead, Lancashire
  15. 1891 Census - 18 Spring Gardens, Newchurch, Lancashire. Again I think there is a mistake in relationships on this Census, but I think I have, by looking for James BATEMAN found the family of Ann, however they put James down as a nephew which he would not have been, he would have been a brother-in-law, but I still think this is the correct family. They are living in Spring Gardens, Newchurch where the family were living on the 1881 Census. Ann and James are both born in Somersham, Huntingdonshire. I know now there were two other BATEMAN families from Somersham, a George and a James both I think brothers of William above. If it came through their families it could be a nephew, but I think the ages and the place rule out this possibility. Now for the details of the family: Richard Gregory was 42 a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, his wife Ann was 39 born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. the children were: William James GREGORY, age 16, a Cotton Weaver, down as being born in Somersham, but again I think this is a mistake and he was born in Newchurch, Lancashire, just ditto's under his mother's name before it turns over the page, Alice A GREGORY age 14, a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Amelia GREGORY, aged 12 a Cotton Spinner, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Mary Han? GREGORY, aged 10 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Sarah GREGORY, aged 8 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Bertha GREGORY, aged 6 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire. Then there is James BATEMAN, a widower down as I say as a Nephew, which I do not think he was, aged 31, a Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, and Willie BATEMAN, aged 6 down as a Cousin who I think is the son of James BATEMAN, a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire
  16. I have been looking for Martha and I thought  I had solved it but her age is not correct. There is a marriage on the BMD for a Martha BATEMAN to a Stephen HUGHES which I think is the correct partner, for on the 1891 Census there is a James MADEN (see Charles BATEMAN, he married a Alice MADEN, so there might be a connection). James is 50, a Cotton Weaver, born Bacup, Lancashire, (I have found that this is in the area of Newchurch), his wife Martha is 41 born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. BUT there is a stepdaughter, a Isabel HUGHES, ages 13, born Bacup, Lancashire. It is the age of Martha that causes me to hesitate as she should be 34 not 41 if she is the correct Martha, but as her husband James MADEN was so much older than her she might have added some years to her age. I have now decided that this is not the correct Martha, having found a BATEMAN family on the 1881 Census with Isabel, as a Granddaughter, the head is a Sarah BATEMAN, born in Huntingdonshire, but a widow aged 56. So I think this Martha, who is on this Census is the correct one to have had Isobel, but the family I think is of one of the brothers of William (main person on chart above) and not our family. The details for the wrong family on the 1901 census are as follows 1901 Census - 16 Stanley Street, Bacup, Lancashire. - James MADEN is 60 a Hawker of Confectionary, born Water, Lancashire, his wife, Martha  is 51, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his Stepdaughter, Isabel HUGHES is 23 an Assistant School Teacher, born Bacup, Lancashire.
  17. 1901 Census - 94 Larch Street, Great Marsden St John, Nelson, Lancashire - Interesting find - John BATEMAN was 34, a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Lancashire his wife was Susan Ann BATEMAN, aged 40 Gevenap? Cornwall, their children were Clara BATEMAN, aged 12 born Nelson, Lancashire and Mary A BATEMAN, aged 8 months born Nelson, Lancashire, but then there was Ann BATEMAN, mother, aged 76, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire and Hannah OGDEN, sister, aged 54, a Laundress, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire.
  18. 1901 Census - 157 Leeds Road, Great Marsden St John, Nelson, Lancashire. William was 52, a Tripe and Sweet Shopkeeper, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his wife Sarah was 51 down as being born in Rosendale, Lancashire. The children were: William BATEMAN, age 26 a Paviour's Labourer (Road Labourer) born Burnley, Lancashire, Ellen BATEMAN, aged 21 a Cotton Weaver, born Nelson, Lancashire, Hannah BATEMAN, aged 16, a Cotton Weaver, born Nelson, Lancashire and John BATEMAN, aged 9 born Nelson, Lancashire. They had a servant, Rachael Braithwaite, aged 16 a General Servant Domestic, born Blackpool, Lancashire.
  19. 1901 Census - 7 Conduit Street, Nelson, Lancashire. I have searched for Sarah before and not found her. There was a Sarah born in Somersham, but the birth date was 1859 and I was not happy with it. This one is the correct birth date and in the correct place, so I am certain this is correct. John STANSFIELD, the Head was 45 a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Sarah STANSFIELD, aged 47, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, Fred STANSFIELD, aged 24, Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Martha STANSFIELD, aged 21, Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Walter STANSFIELD, aged 14, Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Edith STANSFIELD, aged 12, Cotton Weaver (Half Timer) born Nelson, Lancashire, Gertrude STANSFIELD, aged 8, born Nelson, Lancashire, Evelyn STANSFIELD, aged 5, born Nelson, Lancashire. Also with the family was Ann STANSFIELD, mother, age 65 a Widow, born Newchurch, Lancashire.
  20. 1891 Census - Missed this before as Sarah is down as being born in Huntingdonshire, not Somersham - Address 71 St John Street, Little Marsden, Nelson, Lancashire, John STANSFIELD is 35 a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Sarah is 37, born Huntingdonshire, John William STANSFIELD is 16, a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Fred STANSFIELD is 14, a Cotton Weaver, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Martha A STANSFIELD, is 11, a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire,  Walter STANSFIELD, is 4 , a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Edith STANSFIELD, age 2 born Nelson, Lancashire and Ernest STANSFIELD, age 2 months, born Nelson, Lancashire.
  21. 1881 Census - Father Robert Barn, (that is what is says) Newchurch, Lancashire (every address on the page is the same) Sarah is down as being born in Newchurch on this Census, although we now know from the 1891 and 1901 Census she was born in Somersham, Huntingdonshire. John STANSFIELD is 25, a Cotton Weaver, born in Newchurch, Lancashire, Sarah is 25 a Housewife, born as I say on this Census in Newchurch, Lancashire, Their children, John William STANSFIELD, aged 6 a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Fred STANSFIELD, aged 4, a Scholar, born Newchurch, Lancashire, Emily STANSFIELD, aged 3, born Newchurch, Lancashire and Martha Ann STANSFIELD, aged 1, born Newchurch, Lancashire.
  22. 1901 Census - Thomas is living at 35 Hammond Street, Nelson, Lancashire, he is 36, a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his wife Annie C BATEMAN is 37 a Grocer's Shop Keeper, (Own Account)  born Milford, Derbyshire. They have a son Harold F BATEMAN, aged 8, born Nelson, Lancashire.
  23. 1901 Census - I have James BATEMAN on this Census, his wife Margaret is a lot older than him. They have children which are older than if born on the 1891 Census. This leads to a query about who I have as a first wife. However I found James as a Widower on the 1891 Census, so I think at least some of the children are from a first marriage of Margaret. They are living at 883 Primrose Terrace, Rawtenstall formerly Newchurch, Lancashire. James BATEMAN was 42 a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire. His wife Margaret BATEMAN is 53 born Ireland. The children were: Willie BATEMAN aged 16 Warehouse (possibly Carpet), born Lamb, Lancashire, Sarah BATEMAN, aged 12, a Teaser for Woollen Printer, born Lamb, Lancashire, Barbara, age 8, born Lamb, Lancashire, Charles M ??? (McAbeter?- Ancestry.com interpretation) BATEMAN, aged6 born Lamb, Lancashire, Margaret Hamilton BATEMAN, age 3 born Lamb, Lancashire and Betty Peacock BATEMAN, age 2 months, born Lamb, Lancashire. The names of the last children might just give us a clue to the mother's maiden names). Having got further with this family and finding what I believe are the marriage and death dates of James's wives I think that Willie is his son by his second marriage. Sarah I think is a child of Margaret McALISTER's previous marriage, but the rest of the children are of James and Margaret/ I cannot find McAlister on the Census's that matches although there are several Margaret McAlister's born Ireland on the Census. There is one in Barrow-in-Furness which could fit the bill, but she is still married on the 1891 Census and as they married in June quarter 1891 I think it is unlikely. Perhaps it is not McAlister, see child Charles M above where Ancestry.com has it as McAbeter which now having found Margaret's previous name I think this is what this represents. Does this mean that somewhere a Hamilton and a Peacock also involves previous marriages.
  24. 1901 Census - Really testing me now, Charles was down on Ancestry.com as Bolman and born in Summerstown, Huntingdonshire - living at 35 Clough Street, Burnley, Lancashire. He was 39, a Cotton Weaver, born Somersham, Huntingdonshire, his wife was Alice H BATEMAN, aged 39 born Bacup, Lancashire. There were no children.
  25. 1881 Census - Carr, Newchurch, Lancashire - Richard GREGORY is the head age 32, a Cotton Weaver, born Carr, Newchurch, Lancashire, Ann his wife is 29, a Housewife, born Huntingdonshire, their children on this Census were William Jnr GREGORY, son, age 6 a Scholar, born Dean, Lancashire, Alice Ann GREGORY, daughter, age 4, born Dean, Lancashire, Amelia GREGORY, age 2, born Dean, Lancashire and Mary Hannah GREGORY, aged 2 months, also born Dean, Lancashire. next door was a James GREGORY, aged 68, a Farmer of 9 acres born Haslingden, Lancashire and his wife Alice GREGORY aged 71 a Farmers Wife, born Higher Booths, Lancashire which I assume were possibly the parents of Richard.
  26. 1881 Census - I think I have the right James as he was born in he right year and born in Somersham. This give us a name for a wife, but not the one I was expecting, however she is born in Gewnnap, Cornwall and you will see that the wife of John one of his brothers was also born there so I suspect they were sisters. Caroline had died by 1891. The were living at Forest Holme, Higher Booths, Lancashire. They had a daughter Annie BATMAN, aged 1 born Water, Lancashire. As Caroline died soon after the 1881 Census it is possible that James married a three times. I had deleted the second marriage, but have now put it in as a second wedding possibility.
  27. The BMD site appears to give a marriage name for John BATEMAN's wife, but although a marriage comes up for James BATEMAN he is the only person that appears. On the theory that both wives were born in the same place in Cornwall, it is possibly that James's wife was also a WILLIAMS
  28. Found Susan Ann WILLIAMS on the 1881 Census. Living at Spring Garden, Newchurch, Lancashire. Her Father was Thomas WILLIAMS, aged 55 a Willow Tester, born Cornwall, his wife Mary, aged 50 a Housewife, born Cornwall and Susan Ann aged 21 a Cotton Rover, born Cornwall. I have tried the 1871 Census, but have not come up with any conclusive result. There is a Caroline Ann Williams born in Gwennap Cornwall and at that time still living in Cornwall, but her parents do not tie up with those above and as she is down as born in 1865 I would think she was too young to marry in 1879. There is a Susan WILLIAMS, about the right age born Gwennap, Cornwall with a father of the correct name, but her mother is a Jane not a Mary, so as I say nothing conclusive to tie up the two girls who were both born in Gwennap Cornwall who married James and John as being related.
  29. 1901 Census - 5 Grove Street, Barrowford, Lancs, Mary was 56 a widow living on her own means and born in Somersham, Huntingdonshire. The rest of the family were all Cotton Weavers. On this Census there was Ellis, 27 born Burnley, Lancashire, Alice, 22, born Barrowford, Lancs and Margaret, 17 also born Barrowford.
  30. 1891 Census - 1 Florence Street, Great Marsden, Nelson, Lancashire. They had one child Clara, born Nelson, Lancashire. Also May WILLIAMS, mother-in-law, born Kay, Cornwall, was with them so proving the surname of Susan his wife.

Owing to the fact that all the children on this Chart were born in Somersham, Huntingdonshire, but living in the Newchurch, Lancashire, area I have now found marriages for all the families (except now for Martha, see Note 16). I have not found them on every Census, but will continue looking. I think there are other cases where there was more than one marriage. I have found it interesting to see the different cotton industry jobs noted. Lots of Charts now to add. As you can see there are some confusing relationships and I am sure a lot more could be found out about this family.

The idea of these charts is to give the same information that appears in the research we have done and put together in various books. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
