From Census returns it appears that Charles (K)NOWLES lived with his Aunt, Theodosia Leah GRAINGER at the following addresses; 1881 7 Sanitary Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent Age 15 months; 1891 8 Ratcliff Square, Ramsgate, Kent Age 11 years. 1901 3 Denmark Road, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent Age 21 years 
  4. Father - Edward GARDINER (1826-) Farmer 
  5. Father as John MAINERS - Labourer in Parish Register in 1894 but we have assumed this was an error. Married as Elizabeth Ann KNOWLES. 
  6. Father - John William Linneton KNOWLES (bc1828-) 1878 Servant; 1882 Mariner

  9. 1871 Census - 19 Gale Street, West, St Giles in the Fields, St Giles South, London. Down as a Friend at this address.
  10. 1901 Census - 12 Paradise, Ramsgate, Kent. From this Census it would appear that Edward GARDNER had been married before as their is a son Edward Tom GARDENER aged 20 born Birchington-on-Sea, Kent with Edward and Ann,  Edward Tom is down as being "feeble minded from birth". Will add to the Chart above.
  11. 1901 3 Denmark Road, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. Down as Nephew living with his Aunt, Theodosia GRAINGER, see GRAINGER Chart 0400
  12. 1881 Station Road, Birchington, Kent. There was a Boarder an Edward SHEARSBY, aged 29 a Malster born Chislett, Kent
  13. 1891 2 Paradise, Ramsgate, Kent. There were three Lodgers with the family
  14. 1881 3 West Cliff Terrace, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. Ann is a servant with a Mary ASTLE and her sister Ann ASTLE, but Ann is down as married, we know her son was already with her Aunt Theodosia GRAINGER. Was William away a sea or had he already died.
  15. 1901 Lyle House, Crescent Road, Ramsgate, Kent. With an Augusta Leitch a widow living on her means, aged 67 born Ramsgate, Kent and her daughter, Julia M L LEITCH, aged 38 , born Hull, Yorkshire.
  16. 1871 Bull & George, 14 High Street, Ramsgate, Kent. Ann was a Scullery Maid for a William HUDSON, aged 69 a Hotel Keeper born Wingham, Kent. There were eight other servants and four visitors at the premises on the night of the Census.
