  1. 1881 Census from information given to me
  2. 1881 Census for whole family RG11/ 1812. Cottage, Felstead, Essex
  3. 1881 Census for Emily only, Rg11 1813/5 On the 1881 Census Emily was  a Housemaid (Domestic) Aged 20 at Bickners, Barnston, Essex. Joseph Fleetwood WELLS, age 30, a Farmer (of 388 Acres, Employing 16 men and 4 boys), born Little Waltham, Essex, his wife was Jessie Matilda WELLS, age 28 born Canada, a Farmer's Wife, Also in the household was Matilda CAMPBELL Age 69 Mother in Law, born Bristol, Somerset and an Emma DIGBY Age 22 Cook (Domestic) born Great Leighs, Essex
  4. 1891 Census RG12/1427
  5. 1901 Census RG13/1730
  6. Shows as June Quarter 1872 on BMD Web Site, 1874 is what the 1881 Census shows also show again on the June Quarter 1873 on the same site. On Ancestry.com BMD area it shows Annie and Caroline registered at Dunmow in the June quarter of 1873. I therefore now assume they were twins.
  7. 1861 Census - Cottages, Felsted, Essex. Ancestry.com has put the 1861 Census etc online. Having today the 6th June 2005 found this family it has given us a completely different picture to what we had. James MUNSON is a lot older than Mary Ann THOROGOOD, and from this Census it has become apparent that he had a previous marriage. The oldest child on the Census is Charles MUNSON aged 14 born Great Dunmow, Essex. We have a marriage for James and Mary in 1858. The only chance of this being the child of Mary Ann THOROGOOD would be if she married in 1848 not 1858, but even then this would not match the age of Charles and in 1848 she would have only been 16, so I think my assumption that he was previously married is correct. None of the children appear on the Chart as we had it. We started with Emily MUNSON born in 1862. There are five children previous to that and seeing we have said James and Mary married in 1858 I think the last two, Henry and John are the children of James and Mary the other three are from the previous marriage. I have therefore redone the Chart above to show what I think is the situation. (A MUNSON 1861 Census Page can be found by going to Munson 1861 Census)
  8. 1871 Census - Village, Felsted, Essex,
  9. 1891 Census - 111 Chandon Road, West Ham, Stratford, Essex.
  10. 1891 Census - 34 Sackville Street, St James, Westminster, London.
  11. 1891 Census - Caroline MUNSON age 17 was a Servant at "Haverings" Braintree Road, Rayne, Essex (Housemaid, Domestic Servant)
  12. 1891 Census - Alfred MUNSON age 40 widowed, born Felstead, Essex a Miller was staying at Kings Head Alley, Leatherhead, Surrey in a Licensed Lodging House. (will try and find on 1881 Census to see married state)
  13. 1891 Census - 46 Charlotte Street, Marylebone, London.
  14. 1881 Census - 46 Charlotte Street, Marylebone, London.
  15. 1901 Census - 2 Windsor Terrace, Caldwin Road, South Leyton, Leyton, Essex. (no children on the 1901 Census)
  16. Further to my note 7, Robert THORPE my informant for this family in the USA has come back to me and confirmed this first marriage and given me details which I have added to this Chart.
  17. Father - Charles DOLTON
  18. 1881 Hadley, Ombersely, Worcestershire. Alfred was with a Miller in Worcestershire, so assume his occupation "Stone Man" had to do with the Stones used for Milling. He is down as Unm. on this Census. It therefore appears that he married after this and was a widower by 1891. However the only married I can find for an Alfred MUNSON took place in the Sudbury district of Suffolk in the December quarter of 1880.
  19. 1901 Barge House Terrace, Woolwich, London.
  20. 1901 20 Clarence Road, Leyton, Essex,
  21. 1901 203 Old Hill Road, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
  22. 1891 11 Almond Road, Tottenham, Middlesex.
  23. 1901 New Road, Hadleigh, Essex.
  24. 1901 The Priory, Village Street, Ash Priors, Somerset. Annie was a domestic servant (cook)  to a Charles A O Savell Onley born about 1850 Marsham, Norfolk,
  25. Added this child from the BMD because of the second name DALTON which was the maiden name of Caroline, James's first wife. I have at present not found any other reference to him and as the first child of his second wife was Henry, I would think that he died young.
  26. John Clemence appears to have married twice, as well as having a step daughter on the 1901, so it would appear that his second wife had also been married before. On the BMD for his second marriage there is no partner that comes up for John and there are 720 people listed in that quarter for Edmonton, many of them Mary Ann's so do not know which one is the correct person. However as the Stepdaughter on the 1901 Census was named BUSHELL I think it is likely that was the married name of Mary Ann.
  27. 1881 Census - 15 Wood Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk.
  28. 1881 Census - 7 Bolsover Street, Marylebone, London
  29. 1891 Census - 2 Lordship Land? (Lane), Tottenham, Middlesex (Job finding this as Ancestry.com had MUNSON down as MUNTON and birth place as Tebslian, instead of Felstead. Both are quite clear on the Census return as MUNSON and Felstead.
  30. I found the following on the Essex Police site. I think a trip to Chelmsford is called for to try and find the actual picture as it would appear that they actually have a picture of James MUNSON in police uniform:
Before the advent of the helmet another hat was in use. The museum has pictures of Constable James Ballard of Shoeburyness, Constable Thomas Luckin of Great, Dunmow, Constables James Munson and Simon Harrington of Felsted and Sergeant Raven of Colchester. All were serving in the 1870's and 1880's and all wore bowler hats. It was originally thought that these were civilian hats worn with uniform but it was then seen that they had chinstraps.  (Robert THORPE has emailed me a picture of James MUNSON without hat which I have included above)
  31. 1901 Census - 37 Baddow Road, Chelmsford, Essex
  32. 1891 Census - White (Whale) Horse Farm, Baddow Road, Chelmsford, Essex
  33. Have added marriage from the BMD, it is possible that it is not the correct one but only one that appears to be a possible. It could be Mary on the 1901 Census not May. They were in Leyton, Essex on the 1901 Census and West Ham is in that area. They only married months before the 1901 Census was taken.
  34. The marriage certificate says, "Married in the Independent Chapel according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Protestant Dissenters.
  35. Valerie Dust on Genes Reunited says that Annie MUNSON married a Jack BARBER, a widower and brought up his children.

The idea of these charts is to give the same information that appears in the research we have done and put together in various books. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
