  1. At baptisms of these children they were said to be “of Ewhurst” Surrey
  2. Settlement Paper We, Thomas Puttock, David Edwards, Daniel Greenfield, Thomas Winson and Thomas Luxford, Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Cranley in the County of Surrey aforesaid, do hereby own and acknowledge JAMES STEMPT and MARY his wife and MARY his daughter to be inhabitants legally settled in the Parish of Cranley. 7 Nov 1756
  3. In the Alfold Parish Registers there is also a marriage on the 13th October 1778 (witnesses John GIBBS and Jane EAGER) for a James STEMP and Elizabeth NAPPER. Margaret JARVIS suggests that if a couple moved to another parish and could not prove they were married, they had to have another ceremony. On the other hand, in “The Parish Chest”, when referring to Settlement conditions W E TATE states that subsequent marriages took place if the bride and groom were not 21 years old at the time of the previous ceremony. If baptised near his birth date, James would have been 20 years in December 1777.
  4. Mary could have had two illegitimate children: Sarah baptised 9th March 1770 and James baptised 9th September 1770 , both in Cranley, Surrey

The idea of these charts is to give the same information that appears in the research we have done and put together in various books. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
