    1901 "PIONEER" 3rd Class Cruiser - 4th rate ship. Hugh Evan THOMAS Commander. Station Mediterranean, Position Bighi Bay, Malta.
    The "PIONEER" had: Commissioned Officers 10 on board, 1 not on board (the Commander). Warrant Officers 3 on board. Other Officers 1 on board. Seamen 186 on board, 11 not on board. Boys 8 on board. Royal Marines 22 on board
    Totals of 230 on board and 12 not on board.
    1911 Census - 4 Syndale Place Ramsgate, Kent
    1914 - The British Light Cruiser "HMS PATHFINDER", was patrolling the Scottish North Sea Coast in the first Autumn of the first World War. On the 5th September 1914 the U-boat, SMU-21, captained by Otto HERSING, was looking for Leith-bound merchantman to sink when it saw HMS PATHFINDER leaving Rosyth harbour in the FIrth of Forth.
    The U-boat fired a single torpedo, hitting HMS PATHFINDER in the area below the magazine. The torpedo caused a fire which exploded PATHFINDER's ammunition supply sending her to a watery grave.
    HMS PATHFINDER was the first British Warship sunk in the war, and the first ship to be sunk by a submarine. There was 256 dead with 11 survivors. The wreck of the ship in included on the Maritime War Graves List which is a Roll of Honour of United Kingdom vessels which are to be found on the continental shelf around the British Isles. The names of the men who died on the PATHFINDER are on the Chatham Memorial in Kent. In addition, the names of various individuals are to be found on the War Memorials of the sailor's own home towns.
