John Maynard TERRY and his son John TERRY worked at, and lived next door to, the Tomson and Wotton Brewery in Queen Street, Ramsgate, Kent.
This famous Brewery had been established since the time of Elizabeth I and had been in Queen Street since the end of the 16th century. In 1635 the “messuage and dwelling house, malthouse, brewhouse, barns, stables and fifty acres of land” were sold for £250 and were finally acquired by the mariner, Thomas Tomson in 1680. The Wotton family became linked with the firm in 1854 during the years that John Maynard TERRY worked for the company.
Tomson and Wotton became one of the two largest breweries in East Kent before being taken over by Ind. Coope and finally being closed down in 1968.
In 1851 John Maynard TERRY his wife and seven children were living at 27 Queen Street, with William Tomson, Brewer and Maltster at number 28. William Tomson, had a wife and five children, and was looked after by five servants. By the December of 1851 John and his family were living at No. 28 although they had left by 1871.

    “SUICIDE AT BERMONDSEY
On Wednesday evening Mr. William Carter, coroner for East Surrey, held an inquiry at the St. George’s Tavern, Fort Road, Bermondsey, as to the death of John Terry, aged 49, by occupation a ship’s fireman, and lately residing at No. 6, Ridge Street, Bermondsey.
Mary Ann Terry deposed that the deceased was her husband. He had not done any work since last October, through an affection of the spine brought on by overwork. In consequence of his inability to work, witness had to go out to work to maintain the family. This fact seemed to prey on the deceased’s mind, and he often remarked that he would not trouble witness much longer. On Monday night, (Bank Holiday), witness left him at home when she went out to nurse an invalid, and on returning home at 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning was alarmed at finding bedroom door locked. She called in a policeman and on an entrance being gained the deceased was found dead.
Police constable Edward Gulliver, 359 M, stated that he was called to 6, Ridge Street, by the last witness, and found the front room on the ground floor locked from the inside. Witness gained entrance to the room by the front, and on entering found the deceased in a sitting posture on the floor by the bedside, with a plaid scarf round his neck, the other end of which was fastened to the top rail of the bedstead. Witness cut the scarf and sent for medical aid, but on the arrival of the doctor, life was pronounced extinct.
The jury returned a verdict of suicide while mentally deranged.”
    Note:
Her name was Sarah Ann Terry, whether this was a mistake in the report, or she was known as Mary is not known.

The idea of these charts is to give the same information that appears in the research we have done and put together in various books. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
