| Historical Information: | Camberwell was one of the most heavily bombed of the London boroughs during the 1939-1945 War, the number of casualties both of civilians and of service personnel being very high. The cemetery is owned by the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell and was opened between the two world wars, covering some 60 acres of land. A piece of ground in parts of Squares 91 and 92, in the southern half of the cemetery, was set aside during the early months of the war for service war burials. This is now the War Graves Plot, the remainder being scattered elsewhere. 2 ex-servicemen whose deaths were not due to war service are buried in the War Graves Plot. A number of the graves could not be marked by headstones, and a screen wall recording the names of those buried in such graves and of casualties who lie in the War Graves Plot was therefore erected at the rear of this plot. The names of servicemen who were cremated in the adjoining Crematorium are also recorded. The wall is built of Portland stone and set in York stone paving. The names are carved on 14 panels which are set on each side of a central pillar bearing an incised Cross and an appropriate inscription. |
