Who is in the Band?

| Bernard is an established figure in musical circles in
Gloucestershire and has worked extensively as musician, musical director
and arranger in orchestras, military bands, brass bands and wind
orchestras. He has directed a brass consort for sixteen year olds both
locally and nationally and has appeared on television and radio. His
musical tastes encompass the whole range of classical music, musical shows
and musical comedy. He is particularly fond of the music of Leonard
Bernstein and John Williams. He has toured many parts of the globe with a variety of musical combinations, possibly the highlight being to play in the Opera House in Berlin. Bernard worked on and musically directed a gospel musical for which he wrote the score. He was a musical director for Gloucester Operatic Society and musically directed seventeen shows during the 12 years he was with them. He is a founder member of the Glevum Symphony Orchestra, a combination he conducted for 10 years before working as a missionary in the Seychelles. However Bernard's roots are firmly in brass bands. He conducted his home Salvation Army band when he was still 16 and entered Military band service 5 years later. On leaving the forces he was asked to play with Stanshawe, later Sun Life Band, and stayed with them for 9 years in the process winning many major prizes. He also has a great interest in modern church music and indeed sings and plays with two gospel bands. Bernard is thrilled to be asked to conduct Winchcombe Concert Brass and looks forward to a bright and fruitful association. |

| Jamie began playing in brass bands on cornet with the Vale
Youth Band in 1978 and twice won solo competitions organised by the Avonbank
Band. He then played with the Dennbergn Toot Band in Evesham before joining
the Avonbank (Evesham) Band on 3rd cornet. Jamie was one of the founding
members of the Winchcombe Town Band when it was reformed in 1983 and was the
principal cornet before taking a year out in Australia where as a member of
staff he played in the St Stanislaus College Band on 2nd trumpet which won a
local annual band contest. Whilst in Australia he also busked on the streets
of Perth when cash ran low. Back in England Jamie returned to Winchcombe Town Band which was now Winchcombe Concert Brass and eventually returned to principal cornet before moving to flugel horn and then back to cornet. A brief spell with Lydmet Lydney Band on solo cornet helped them win promotion to Championship Section. Jamie has also played in the pit orchestra at the New Olympus Theatre in Gloucester with Greg Morgan (previous conductor and current conductor's son) most recently for Crazy For You, and Guys & Dolls. |
