The Daggers once again outplayed Charlton and once again did not get the reward they deserved for their efforts. Charlton made several changes from the side that had played the Daggers at the Valley, with Bartlett and Pringle unavailable, Salako and Newton given starts and Greame Stuart back from suspension. The Daggers on the other hand made no changes to the starting line-up but put Keen on the bench in place of Hamsher who left to join Stevenage.

The home side nearly made the most amazing start when Jason Broom crossed to the far post where Janney had drifted in from the right, but his header was inches wide. This did not spark the Addicks into life though, and the Daggers continued to dominate for the first 30 minutes.

Lee Goodwin almost capitalised from a corner, when the ball was swung in low and although he threw his right leg at the ball, he couldn't quite connect and the ball shot across the goal and out for a goal kick.

Junior McDougald tried a cheeky effort when Matthews' stinging free-kick was backhealed goalwards, but Kiely stretched to catch the ball in mid-air. Danny Shipp had a golden chance minutes later when Heffer chipped forward to him, and he hit a left foot volley which sadly lacked power and Kiely tipped round the post.

Lee Matthews then had another free-kick which he once again powered goalwards, but Kiely did well to save.

Towards the end of the half, Charlton begun to come back into the game, and had a good chance when Stuart hit an 18-yard low shot, but it went just wide of Roberts' left hand post as he waved it wide.

Just before half-time though, Roberts was twice called into action and he responded in excellent fashion. Lisbie, looking to grab his first team chance with both hands, went through on goal but Roberts stood up well and tipped round the post. One minute later, Lisbie had another chance. Brown hit a low cross across the Daggers box and it went through everyone until it was met by Lisbie 4 yards out with the goal gaping. The goal seemed a formality, but somehow Roberts managed to get across the goal and down the tip the ball away with his right hand, a truly great save.

In the second half, Charlton seemed to have lost their rhythm and the Daggers soon asserted themselves again. Within seconds, the defence parted like the red sea as Terry ran at them and hit a low shot from 25 yards which Kiely gathered at the second attempt.

The second half lacked much of the first's action though, and the only goalmouth incident for much of it was the Daggers earning corner after corner. Matthews had a half chance from one when he collected at the back post and fired goalwards but he was closed down and another corner was the result.

As the half wore on, the Daggers could have again scored. On 78 minutes Shipp received the ball 20 yards out and he turned expertly before smashing the ball low, but it was the side-netting, rather than the back of the net which the ball hit.

Charlton had a chance of their own on 81 minutes when Charlie MacDonald headed over from a Newton cross, as he just failed to climb high enough. That was it for the second half and the game moved into 30 minutes of extra time.

In extra time, it took Charlton just 1 minute to score, albeit undeservedly. Salako crossed from the left with his right foot, and as Vickers left it to go out for a goal kick, he didn't see Newton sneak in to prod home from an acute angle.

The Daggers were not about to lie down and take it though, and were right back at Charlton. It seemed the equaliser had come from Tim Cole, and it was only as the crowd started to celebrate that they realised it was ruled out. From a corner, Kiely caught the ball but dropped it under pressure from Goodwin, and as Cole fired in, the referee blew for a foul on the keeper.

Still the Daggers wouldn't lie down though despite this kick in the teeth, and Janney could have got the Daggers back in it on the stroke of half time in extra time. Shipp hit a stinging shot from the side of the box, and it deflected out to Janney who tried to guide the ball past Rufus into the unguarded net from 20 yards, but it went agonisingly wide.

Cobb had the final chance when he turned in the box and fired goalwards, but it lacked the power to go beyond the grasp of Kiely.

Once again, after dominating the game and clearly having the most shots, you can't help feeling that the Daggers easily deserved the win, in much the same way as they had at the Valley. So near yet so far, once again a deserved victory over the Premier League opposition is denied.
