The first half was a complete stalemate with minimal action on the pitch. The Daggers fielded Shipp and Cobb up front together for the first time this season and every time the ball was played up to them they failed to hold it up. At the back, the Daggers were impressive with some great tackling and marking. The only real chance of the game was a free kick on the edge of the Daggers box which was curled low around the wall but Roberts got down well to tip round the post. At the other end, the Daggers also had a free kick but Jones curled it straight into the keeper's arms. The Daggers could have scored on the breakaway early on when Janney was released down the right and he sprinted down the line before whipping the ball across but there was no aerial threat from the attack. Another chance was almost created when Cobb tried to roll the ball through to Janney behind the left back but the ball went into touch. At the Daggers end, Roberts was left to clear up on the left hand side when the ball was played beyond the defence, but his left footed clearance when under pressure fell to a Chester player who passed to the right winger who tried to curl the ball in but it was wide with Roberts recovered anyway. Another attack was halted by Lee Goodwin who chased back and put in a great sliding tackle to deny the left winger a cross. The Daggers did not have a real shot for the whole half and the first half was a dull affair with minimal scatterings of entertainment.

In the second half, it was not long before the ineffectual Cobb was deservedly replaced by Junior McDougald and the game changed for the better. However, Cobb did have one chance before he went off. Shipp ran down the left hand side and pulled across a great left-foot ball but Cobb just threw his leg and it and hoped, the ball coming off his thigh and going wide. Shipp won several balls in the air and was holding the ball up much better than in the first half with Junior McDougald harrasing the defence in the way Cobb used to in seasons gone past. Paul Terry had a shot from the edge of the box near the start of the half but he curled it just over the angle. The Daggers won several corners with Shipp and Janney getting down the wing and playing the ball of the left back for a succession of flag kicks. On 72 minutes the Daggers took the lead though. A Matt Jones corner was headed goalwards by Lee Goodwin before Heffer intervened and tried to poke home, and the ball bounced up for Shipp to throw his head at it and send the ball into the net. Shortly after, Junior McDougald had a good chance to finish it off when he was put through with only the keeper to beat, but he pushed the ball too far and the keeper tried to smother it, and although Junior regained possession, the defence had got back. The game then developed into a kicking match with Chester kicking everything that moved and referee doing absolutely nothing about it. He did issue one card though, to Steve Heffer when he had blatantly won the ball. With only 5 minutes left, Chester equalised though. The defence made several good tackled before the ball fell to a Chester forward 18 yards out who smashed the ball through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner.
