In the first half it was the Daggers that started the better of the two teams, despite starting the game without seven first team regulars, and could of easily have found themselves several goals up within the first twenty minutes. Rob Haworth had the first chance when he was put through with a diagonal ball and he ran onto it and hit a powerful shot from the corner of the box which went just over the angle of post and bar. Paul Cobb was the next player to threaten when he had time and space 25 yards out but he hit a low shot which went well wide of the goal. Steve Heffer had two chances with two good shots as well, the first of which was when Mark Keen ran with the ball and was fouled, but Heffer ran onto the loose ball and hit a 30 yard shot which went about a yard wide of the keeper's right hand upright. The second chance was when he received a clearance that was misplaced and he hit the ball low through a crowd of player and again the ball went very close, this time skimming the post as it went wide. Lee Goodwin could have got the elusive goal when he got his head to a cross but it was saved low down by Hyde in the home goal. There was also another good chance for the away team when Heffer dribbled the ball down the middle before giving it up the left wing to Cobb who hit a cross to the far post, but the Daggers couldn't capitalise. On 43 minutes though, Dover scored with their first on target shot of the half. The only threat they had posed previously were two long shots which were deflected round the post for corners. The goal did come from a corner though, and when Roberts only punched his clearance to the edge of the box, Le Bihan hit a shot through the crowded box and it was deflected in by Strouts in front of goal. The Daggers could still have taken something from the half when Matt Jones made a good run and hit a left foot curler which went just over the bar.

The Daggers came out in the second half and despite the game being more even than it had been in the first half, the Daggers were back in the game within ten minutes. The Daggers won a free kick on the left wing and it was swung over to the far post and Haworth met it and headed back across the goal and the keeper who should have stopped it, and into the far bottom corner. The Daggers didn't do so well after this though and despite having a couple of chances, found themselves behind again when the Daggers gave away a penalty. As the home forward ran into the box, Steve Forbes brought him down and was booked for the foul. Lee Shearer stepped up to put the spot kick low to the right of Roberts. Haworth was involved in a nasty incident with home goalkeeper Hyde in which the Dover player should have been sent off. As Hyde came to claim a loose ball, Haworth slid in to challenge. Hyde was not happy, despite the fact that Haworth didn't even make contact with him, and proceeded to stamp on the midriff of the Dagenham forward. The referee did not show a card of any sort however. He did show the red in the game though, but to a Daggers player, Steve Forbes. After being booked for the penalty decision, he was shown a second yellow for feet up where the Dover player went down holding his face after both players challenged for a bouncing ball in midfield. Daggers boss Garry Hill also saw red when he made a comment about the sending off, and was sent to the stand by the referee. Still shaken from the sending off, the Daggers let a third goal in. Danny Hockton, who has an impressive scoring record for Dover since his move recently, hit a half volley from the edge of the box which gave Roberts no chance. Minutes later Dover could have made it four when a second penalty was given, this time not very clear as the first had been. However, the referee gave it and Shearer put it the same side as before but just wide of the post. This gave the Daggers a kick they needed and they could have got back into it when Haworth met a corner at the far post but somehow put the ball over with his head from 2 yards. Haworth should have then been awarded a penalty, when he shielded a ball by the byline in the box and was hacked from behnd, but the referee decided no penalty. Jones could also have scored with another long ranger that was going just under the bar, but for the hand of home keeper Hyde. Dover had chances as well on the break and hit the post from 18 yards, but again the Daggers had the chances but didn't take them.
