The first half was a fairly even affair although the Daggers did create the most obvious chances in front of goal but failed to take them. John Hamsher nearly got a home debut goal when he cut inside and hit a left foot curler from 20 yards which skimmed along the pitch but was well saved by 'Highlighted Hyde' in the Dover goal. Danny Shipp could also have scored but for poor control. He was put through with only the keeper to beat but the ball bounced off his foot and away from goal, and although Shipp got there first and left the keeper sprawling on the ground, he failed to keep a cool head and fired behind the goal from a very acute angle. Shipp was much better in his approach play and effort though, chasing long clearances and putting himself about, as well as showing good control and passing when needed. Roberts was not without action though and had to make a good save when the ball was fired across him from the right of his box, but he made it look easy and held the ball well. The Daggers defence also had a heart stopping moment when Dover broke quickly and crossed from the right which was headed against the bar and away to safety. Dover had a couple of wayward shots as well, such as it the first few minutes when a long range volley went well wide and later on when another 20 yard shot was screwed well wide. The game was not much of a spectacle in the first half and this had much to do with the referee who decided to baffle the players with his interpretation of the rules. The Daggers also had several wayward shots, a Tim Cole header from a corner which was high and wide and a Heffer long shot from a free-kick which had been squared to him but he put it a couple of feet over.
The second half produced much more entertainment than the first, and the Daggers had chances to take the game several times. Paul Terry had a good shot on the turn from the side of the six yard box pushed over by the keeper, but the Daggers did capitalize in the 58th minute when McDougald scored. The ball was floated in from a free kick and the ball skimmed off the head of a defender and bobbled across the body-filled box and McDougald was the only player who seemed aware and he prodded home from 2 yards. The Daggers then had more chances and possession in which they should have wrapped the game up. Lee Goodwin had a chance when the ball dropped to him 20 yards out and he volleyed goalwards only to see the ball go straight at the keeper. Lee Goodwin had a second chance from a corner, when he had a free header at the far post but he headed inches over the bar. No more chances came though, despite a period of good possession, and then Dover came back into it. Several goalmouth scrambles ensued in the Daggers area with the defence getting the better of them all, with clearances and tackling, but Dover could have scored when they broke and shot across Roberts but once again he held it well. Roberts was in action minutes later as well, when he made a good save to his left, and as the rebound was fired towards his top right corner, he somehow managed to get up and threw himself across the full width of the goal to tip round the post as he flew through the air, making a save any keeper would dream about. He also had a long shot near the end which he pushed over when backpeddling. Just as it looked like the Daggers could hold on though, Dover hit back, a corner from the left headed in by the unmarked Hockton in injury time.
