The first half was a pretty even affair with both sides looking as if they could break the deadlock. Hayes forced a succession of corners which the Daggers did well to defend, Mark Keen heading away from 6 yards and a long goal mouth scramble that was eventually cleared after several anxious moments. The Daggers took the lead though, from a well worked set piece, which may have been quite fortunate. A Matt Jones corner was headed back across his own goal by a defender and Mark Keen rose to head the ball over the stranded keeper. The Daggers started to create after this and could well have killed the game with one of many chances. Paul Terry had an audacious 35 yard shot tipped over when it looked a goal all the way, and Tim Cole could have scored when he rose above the defence and keeper to head down, only for the ball to strike a defender on the line. The referee, poor throughout, should really have awarded a penalty to the Daggers. Junior McDougald held the ball up on the byline, whilst having the shirt pulled from his back, and then turned into the box before blantantly being hacked down, but the referee decided against the penalty. The referee also decided to book McDougald midway through the half, when he retreated after a free kick was given against him, and a Hayes player decided to kick the ball at McDougald as he jogged off. The referee saw this as obstructing the free kick and showed McDougald the yellow. The Daggers could have added to their lead again when Broughton drove the ball across the area but nobody met it at the far post. Hayes started to attack more as the half reached the end, and pushed the daggers back for a good ten minutes, which saw them play in the Daggers half but without creating anything worthy of mention. However, in injury time, Hayes broke clear, and although Roberts saved the first shot, the rebound was buried by Boylan.
The second half saw chances at both ends, but ended with Hayes physically exhausted and the Daggers with a progression to the next round. Early in the half, Hayes could have got themselves ahead, but for the excellence of Roberts. A Hayes forward powered across the pitch and hit a low shot which took a wicked dflection. With Roberts seemingly stranded after diving for the original path of the ball, he somehow managed to claw the ball away and then a blazing follow up from an acute angle was also met by Roberts who, still on the floor, caught the ball and prevented the goal. Roberts was called into action again when a low shot was hammered goalwards from about 12 yards, but Roberts again held the ball well down to his right. This was the kick the Daggers needed and proceeded to attack. Ashley Vickers could well have given the Daggers the lead when, collecting the ball on the halfway line, he beat three men and blasted goalwards from 25 yards which was just over. Just after the hour, the Daggers did take the lead again. Junior McDougald received the ball in a crowded box and executed a Cruyff turn which put the ball at the feet of Broom on the by-line who drove it across the goal. The ball was met by the unfortunate Alvin Watts, the ball hitting his legs and going into the net. Jason Broom had a guilt edged chance which he somehow missed. Jones put in a great cross from the left which was headed down by Broughton and the unmarked Broom stooped to head, but didn't make contact, the ball going over him and wide. Towards the end, Shipp and Cobb were introduced and looked quite good up front. However, it was Jones who sealed the game with a Forest Green-esque wonder goal. He picked up the ball on the keeper's right of the box before cutting inside and hitting an 18 yard curler inside the left hand post of the Matt Hodson who had no chance. Hayes nearly got one back but once again Roberts was there. The ball was played into the box and Roberts flung himself in front of the waiting striker way to his left and made a great block, picking up a kick from the forward in the process. Cobb and Janney could have added further goals, Janney going clear and chipping over the bar, and unmarked Cobb set up by Shipp put his shot at the keeper from 4 yards.
