The Daggers came back from their defeat away at Nuneaton in the best possible way, overcoming a potential banana skin at home to the Conference's bottom club Kettering. The Daggers were back to full strength bar Mark Brennan who was rested as he recovers from his foot injury. New signing from Colchester, Jack Wignall was on the bench for the Daggers.
A convincing victory for the Daggers looked on the cards early on as Lee Goowin scored two goals. The first came when the Daggers won a free kick on the left. As the ball was whipped into the box, the Kettering keeper seemed to have caught it, but it slipped through his grasp to Goodwin at the far post who had an easy task to prod home.
The second came soon after when Tim Cole went through and hit a weak left foot volley from the keeper's right of the box and about 10 yards out. The ball went under the dive of the keeper and as a defender stood ready to clear, Goodwin slid in to help the ball squirm over the line.
The Daggers nearly let Kettering get right back into it with a bad defensive lapse that gifted Kettering a goal. The ball was lifted into the Daggers box and the defence let it drop, and although Roberts saved the first shot, he couldn't quite manage to keep Collins' follow-up out despite getting a hand to it.
McDougald could easily have given the Daggers a re-extended lead when he was put through and outpaced the defence, but although he beat the keeper with a firm shot, he couldn't beat the woodwork as the ball smacked the bar and went out for a goal kick.
The Daggers did not play particularly well, but two good pieces of football got them a three goal cushion by half-time. The third Daggers goal came from the head of Broom who claimed his third of the week, none of which came with his favoured left foot. The ball was swung into the box by Janney who beat his full-back easily, and Broom arrived to head home.
The Daggers fourth goal came from the penalty spot after Broom had been put through and pulled down by the Kettering keeper. As Broom was going away from goal, the keeper was only booked, but he could not keep out McDougald's penalty low to his right despite reaching it and getting a good hand to it.
The second half was a case of maintaining the lead for the Daggers, as they sat back and conserved their energy for Tuesday's game. Despite this, Kettering did not create too many opportunities and the second half was boring by comparison to the first. There were three pieces of goalmouth action for the Daggers though.
Firstly, Opara went through on goal only to be seemingly pulled down by the Kettering keeper on the edge of the box. However, his over-zealous descent to the ground did not convince the referee and he was booked for diving to his amazement.
Towards the end of the half, Janney made a great run through the whole Kettering team from his own half and hit a 20 yard left-foot shot which was caught by the Kettering keeper.
To cap the win, the Daggers had time for a fifth goal. Opara was released down the left wing and he cut inside a although Cobb was well positioned in front of goal, Opara opted to shoot from an acute angle, and whipped the ball between the keeper and his post.
Despite the scoreline, the Daggers were not at their best but three points were gained and the Daggers moved three points closer to their survival target of 52.
