The Daggers took control of this game in the first half and seemed to have the game sewn up by half time. The Daggers had more of the possession and could have scored through Steve Heffer. The ball broke to him inside the box and he hit a left foot volley that was well blocked by a defender. Heffer had another chance later from long range but he put it well over the goal and the stand. On 20 minutes though, the Daggers took the lead through Janney. Paul Terry hit a great pass that left Janney to shrug off the defender and hit a low shot past the keeper. Kingstonian could have got back into against the run of play though when a long range low shot was tipped round the post by Roberts. From the corner Kingstonian had another chance to equalise when the flag-kick was headed against the post and deflected away to safety. Roberts was in action again later on in the half when he claimed a cross excellently. Kingstonian came back into the match after this and had some good possession but without creating many goalscoring opportunities. The half was marred by a whistle happy referee who needed little prompting to give free-kicks and Kingstonian players who went down under the slightest challenge. The defence was excellent though, keeping out any threat from forwards Winston and Akuamoah, Matthews particularly outstanding. New boy John Hamsher was impressive with overlapping runs down the right flank and forced several corners which were all cleared. Shipp had a good shot midway through the half when he found himself unmarked but his left foot drive was well saved by the home keeper. With minutes to go though, McDougald gave the Daggers a two-nil lead. He got the ball about 25 yards out before running to the edge of the box, selling the defender a dummy and firing a left foot shot beyond the onrushing keeper.

In the second half, the Daggers seemed to be in control and easily protecting their two goal lead. There was little threat from the home forwards and the Daggers could have killed the game with a third goal several times. Danny Shipp had the best chance when a home defender passed the ball straight to him 6 yards from goal, but by the time he had controlled it and turned, the keeper was at his feet to smother the shot. Shipp had another great chance when a Janney cross cleared the last defender and he seemed somewhat suprised to receive the ball, and hit a poor shot with his left foot which the keeper dealt with. Kingstonian then got back into the game with two quick goals. The first came from a set piece when Vickers headed into his own net from close range when him and Roberts got in each other's way trying to clear the danger. The second came minutes later when another set piece resulted in a scramble in the box and a deflected shot was volleyed into the top corner by Wingfield. The Daggers regained their composure though and came at Kingstonian again in the later stages. With only two minutes of normal time remaining, the Daggers got the winner though McDougald. Shipp received the ball in midfield and powered up the right wing before driving the ball across the area to the feet of Junior McDougald who shruged off the defender and prodded home from a couple of yards. The Daggers could eaily have extended their lead after this and nearly hit Kingstonian on the break when Shipp went clear after a flick on by Junior, but the referee spotted something nobody else did and gave a mysterious free kick against Junior.
