The Daggers started off not looking too impressive in the first half, and Leigh had much possession in midfield without doing anything with it. It took a corner and a Lee Matthews double effort to spark the Daggers into life, and when they did it was with good effect. A corner came in a Lee Matthews had one shot blocked and the rebound cleared off the line and into the keeper's hands. The Daggers saw the opportunity of goals and from then on took control. Danny Shipp who was quite impressive throughout, although not so when it came to finishing, ran into the box and his weak shot was blocked, leaving Junior McDougald to bury the rebound from close range. The Daggers then set about controlling the game and started to pass the ball around more on the icy surface, and it was a series of good passes that led to the second of the Daggers' goals only a few minutes after the first. McDougald, Broom and Jones interchanged one-touch passes and eventually Jones found himself unmarked near the edge of the box and he sidefooted the ball calmly into the keeper's bottom right corner. Tony Roberts made sure that the two goal lead remained intact soon after with a great save where he pushed a shot from the left of his box up over the crossbar when a goal looked probable. The Daggers could have then gone on to make it three when Danny Shipp cut inside on his left foot and hit a low shot from 20 yards which came back off the keeper's left hand post. Immediately from this, Leigh went for the breakaway goal and even though Hamsher was beaten and the ball shot goalwards with Roberts having come out to close the angle, Hamsher got back and cleared off the line. However, as he did so, he fell into the net and pulled it away from the goal frame, which led to a ten minute break in the half. Once the net had been fixed and play resumed, Leigh wasted not time in getting back into the game when a corner was headed home at the far post by Ridings. The rest of the half was played out without much goalmouth action.

In the second half, the Daggers came out looking for the third and had many chances to get it, Danny Shipp the worst culprit, missing several good opportunities. Matt Jones had the first of many chances though, when a good right wing cross was met at the far post by Jones who headed down but unfortunately the ball hit a defender and deflected over the bar from a couple of yards out. Steve Heffer had a half-chance when the ball was layed back to him about 20 yards out but he hit his shot well over the bar. Then came the Danny Shipp catalogue of missed chances. He had a great chance when he received a left wing cross at the back post about 18 yards out and he took the ball on his thigh and hit a volley goalwards but the keeper got down well to his left to push the ball round the post. His second was a long range effort that in past years may have given most keepers more than enough trouble, when he hit goalwards from 25 yards, but he didn't catch it at all and it went out for a goal kick low to the keeper's right. The last good chance was when he received the ball centrally to the goal 18 yards out and pushed it away from him before shooting to the keeper's left, but a defender got their to block the shot. Matt Jones was then involved in a nasty incident in which he was chasing a long ball with a defender and received an elbow in the face, although not overly vicious. The referee spotted it and gave the free kick but amazingly kept his cards in his pocket. Minutes later the same player launched a two footed tackle on Jones by the corner flag and although he got the ball, he also got Jones, and this time he was booked, but overall very lucky to stay on the pitch. The Daggers thought they had finally got the elusive third when Goodwin rose above the defence from a corner and headed in but the referee gave a mysterious free kick when the Leigh players were not even protesting for a foul. McDougald could have got the third with a shot from 18 yards out but his shot was saved by the keeper.
