The first half saw little goal mouth incident, but Lincoln did have the first effort on goal when a weak header downwards from a left wing cross was easily stopped by Roberts. The Daggers immediately responded by attacking the Lincoln defence. First Danny Shipp hit a shot on the turn that was well blocked by a defender, and then Paul Terry hit a long range efforst that looked to be dipping over the keeper but he just managed to tip the ball over the bar. Then Lee Matthews had good chance when he hit a curling long-ranger through a crowd of bodies but the ball fell straight into the unsighted keeper's arms. The rest of the half was a midfield battle, and the closest that Lincoln came to producing a goal was several crosses from the right wing that were all cleared by Roberts, Matthews and Cole. Other than crosses, the Imps did not have any sight of goal throughout the first half and the Daggers seemed to be in control of the game. The defence worked hard to clear all long balls that Lincoln threw at them and the midfield worked hard to win the ball and start attacks. Paul Terry had another shot in the first half when his corner was cleared back to him but he scuffed wide. Mark Janney had a good opportunity when he went on a run through the middle and beat two before being tackled just as he was about to shoot. Lincoln did threaten the get away on the break but the Daggers defence always cleared the danger.
The second half was much more eventful though and the Daggers really asserted themselves upon a dissapointing Lincoln side. Danny Shipp hit a low shot when set up by McDougald from 20 yards but the ball was well held by Ghent. Junior McDougald sent out the warning signs to a laclustre home defence when he got clear and tried to flick the ball over the onrushing keeper but he did not get enough height and the ball was caught. Paul Terry almost put McDougald through again when he split the defence but the pass was just to long for Junior to reach. Lincoln become increasingly frsutrated and had several long range shots that were all high and wide. The away side did have some scares in their own box when Roberts failed to hold some crosses and goalmouth scrambles ensued, but a packed penalty box prevented the ball being put in and eventually a free kick was awarded to the Daggers. Danny Shipp could have scored a wonder goal when he tried to flick a McDougald towards the top corner with a right foot toe-ender but the ball curled just over. The Imps defence were struggling with the strength of Shipp and the pace of McDougald throughout and the Daggers created chance after chance which were all missed. Paul Terry was again in the action when he tried to finish off a move involving Junior and Janney but his shot was deflected wide, despite the goal-kick signalled by the referee. When a draw looked likely, though, Janney popped up to give the Daggers what they deserved. He received the ball 25 yards out, ran down the left wing and cut back onto his right before hitting a weak shot straight at the keeper. However, home keeper Ghent, only just voted Man of the Match, let the ball slip through his legs and over the line, and despite the defender clearing the ball, it was well over the line and the Daggers players and fans were in hysterics. Minutes later, the full time whistle went and the fans and players celebrated in style.
