The Daggers took control of this match and did not allow the home side to create any chances, whilst creating some good ones themselves. However, they nearly found themselves behind early on when a bad backpass from Tim Cole nearly let a home forward in but Daggers keeper Tony Roberts cleared the danger well. The Daggers controlled the game well after this initial scare though, and went ahead through Mark Keen. A Mark Brennan free kick was floated into the far post and Keen rose well to head across the home keeper Wilkerson and into the net. The Daggers then created several more chances and should have added a second before the break. Paul Terry wasted a good chance when the home keeper miscued his clearance to Terry, but he placed his shot poorly and allowed Wilkerson the chance to save. Keen nearly added his second when he volleyed goalwards from a corner but the ball was cleared off the line. Junior McDougald had a good chance when he received the ball 20 yards out but he fired his left foot shot inches wide of the keeper's left hand post. Paul Terry had another chance before half time when he was played through but lack of pace saw him caught and tackled. Tony Roberts provided entertainment of his own at the other end of the pitch when he decided to play a game of keepy-uppy in his penalty area after a long clearance had run through to him, much to the delight of the travelling support.

In the second half, Stevenage attacked to a greater extent but without creating any chances. The Daggers on the other hand continued to create and almost added a second through Mark Brennan. The ball dropped to him on the corner of the box and he connected with a screaming left foot volley that flashed through a crowd of bodies and just wide of the keeper's left hand post. Brennan had another chance when he took a free kick on the keeper's left hand side of the box. He dummyed to play it into the far post and with the keeper out of position he bent it towards the near post, striking the upright. Paul Terry failed to direct the rebound with the keeper stranded. Haworth almost scored when he battled his way into the box and shot just over. Brennan showed his class when Mark Keen went off, slotting into left back with Ashley Vickers moving into the middle of defence. Paul Terry added a second goal for the visitors with 20 minutes to go. Mark Brennan sent a pinpoint accurate cross to the far post where Haworth, playing on the right wing with McDougald a lone striker, cushioned a header into the path of Terry who rolled the ball under the home keeper. Stevenage started to attack more after this and forced Roberts into his first save of the game when he went down to his left to gather the ball easily.
