The word that immediately springs to mind is 'poor' and that is exactly what the Daggers were. Whether it was cup hangover or cup anticipation, it was a below par performance from last week's cup heroes. The Daggers rested two of the players who had played at Charlton, Paul Terry and Mark Janney and it showed as the Daggers lost the midfield battle for much of the game. Steve Forbes, playing centrally with Heffer played by far his worst game in a Daggers shirt, looking so far off the pace and giving the ball away far too often.
It was the vital area of the pitch the Daggers couldn't afford to lose, and most of the game saw the ball in the air and lots of heading practice. The Daggers never even attempted to play the football that has seen them well so far this year, and resorted to copying Weymouth's long ball tactics. The Daggers also failed to close the game down, and the first half was far to open with several end-to-end incidents.
This is not to say that the Daggers couldn't have scored - or that Weymouth couldn't have. Dagenham were mainly restricted to several long range efforts though and never got enough crosses in or played enough football around the penalty area. Danny Shipp looked the most likely, having a few long range efforts saved or blocked. The first was a cross field run that ended in a ferocious shot that was blocked by the backside of a defender. The next was another run which ended in a drive straight into the keeper's arms.
Steve Heffer also had a long shot when McDougald layed it back to him but he lent back and put it well over. The closest Weymouth came was when a forward was put through but stepped on the ball and fell over, sparing Daggers blushes. McDougald could have got himself another to add to his tally when he got away down the left and cut in, but he shot into the keeper's arms as well.
In the second half, Weymouth had a few more chances and the Daggers had very few. Neither side played at all wel throughout and 0-0 looked on the cards for much of the game. Tony Roberts kept the Daggers in it with a great save, when he came and blocked at the feet of a striker when he looked second favourite to win the ball. Junior McDougald had the best chance at the other end when he tried to shoot across the keeper after a corner was cleared to him, but the keeper made a good save to his right.
Mark Keen could also have given the Daggers the lead when he rose above evryone from a corner but he put his header just wide of the post. Weymouth nearly scored from a free kick, which they flashed across the wall and towards the goal, but it went just wide.
Paul Cobb also had a chance for the Daggers when he beat two men and forced a save from the away keeper. He also had a chance from a goalmouth scramble but the defender just got there first and cleared for a corner.
But in the final minute of the game, Weymouth did the giant killing act as the home defence fell asleep. A forward went through on goal and chipped over Roberts as he tried to smother but hit the post. Despite Janney getting back to guard the line, the ball fell to Phillips who passed the ball into the net past Janney.
